Mr cyclone, I think the background just provides more surface for the nitrifying bacteria to live on, so I'm not worried. I still do regular water changes in the tank and clean the glass and rinse the sponge filter. It's been running like this since October and apart from some algae there hasn't been a problem. I'll try to take a photo soon to show how the plants have grown.
