Need info please!

Sid and Sally moved into their new bigger home today! I do believe they like it so far. Not sure if this means anything or not but gonna ask anyways...I noticed one had bigger spots, does that mean anything? So here are a few pics in the new home, hope they give an idea of how cool they really are. Again thanks for all the info.

I've seen lots of Notos, and I've seen a lot of variation, just in one lake. I don't think it means anything.

Almost certin that they are N. v. piaropicola now.

Ok I have to ask...Sid and Sally keep going into the headlock position, does this mean they are mating or that they are just rough housing? Geez they have 10 gallons and yet they keep doing this. I am trying not to worry that one will drown the other. i guess I am just being a paranoid parent? If anyone can tell me something I will be so happy. Thanks...

The male(sid) is trying to convince Sally to mate. More on that in the caresheet.

It looks dangerous, but this is normal behavior for this species. In one case, I did have to separate a female Notophthalmus from her tankmates during breeding season; she had been held in amplexus so much that she had developed a sore on the top of her head. If you still have the fishbowl, you might want to consider keeping the male there part-time if they seem to be in amplexus constantly.

Also... do you have a secure lid on the new tank?

Jennifer thanks for the advice, yes we do find from time to time that we split them up because we worry that he will get too aggressive . And yes we have a full lid on tank now. We kept the bowl, planning on putting a fighting fish in it, which we could still use for the newts too. LOL Not to mention our cat only will drink water from that bowl.

Talk about nature at its finest...since moving Sid and Sally to their new home they seem to love it judging by all the sex. Been watching the eggs lately, am so in awwe ...I see life forming. Now a new question for anyone...how long till birth? Will send pics soon.

Kelly, eggs hatch within a few weeks, depending on temperatures.

If you don't remove the larvae/eggs from the tank, chances are the parents will eat them. This is the 'best' form of birth control. If you want to raise a few, I'd take them out now.
