Hello there! I have a juvenile axolotl (about 2 inches). I also have two mystery snails in my other aquarium who keep laying egg clutches. Would there be a problem with feeding the eggs to my axolotl or to my african dwarf frogs? I hate to keep wasting a possible food source, but I don't want to cause any problems. Thanks!

From my understanding, you don't want to take the chance of having snails in your tank with your axolotl. They can cause impactions or other injuries.

I have no idea about frogs.

Oh no they aren't together. The snails live in my fish aquarium and lay their eggs there. I was just wondering if I could feed the eggs to the axolotls. My snails lay their eggs under the aquarium hood. I scrape the egg clutch off and dispose of it to avoid a snail explosion lol.

I read that snail eggs and baby snails are a natural food source for axolotl... But my flatmate put pond snails in my tank (against my permission) and they laid egg sacks EVERY WHERE. Annoyed the **** out of me seeing them everywhere and having my tank overrun in baby snail! At one stage I scrapped the egg sack off and tried feeding it to the axys (six in total, only two are mine for are my flatmates) and not a single one of them actually ate it. Two tried but spat it out pretty quick.

I have now just completely torn down my tank and had to completely start over fresh to get rid of all the snails. You could try feeding the egg clutch to your axolotl and if they like them then great you have a new food source and if they don't like them well there was no harm in trying :)

And as for keeping axolotl and snails together... I've been lead to believe that mystery snail egg clutchs are destroyed (will not mature into baby snails) when they drop into the water so even if you did feed them to your axy and your axys spat them out you wouldn't have to worry about the eggs then hatching and causing there to be snails in your axy tank :)

(Please correct me if I'm wrong!)

Yeah mystery snail eggs definitely won't hatch if submerged. Cool, then I think I'll try it. I'm not holding my breath my axy will like them. So far all it will eat is live black worms and frozen blood worms. I try pellets, and it looks at me like, "Really? Pfft."

Axolotls and hymenichorus ignore snail eggs sacks. Axolotls eat them after they hatch and I cant say I have ever seen the frogs eat them.

I've got snails in almost all of my tanks, because I believe they have a positive influence regarding to the balans. It isn't possible to keep a population in every tank, because some newt species like to eat them. Axolotls are one of them, though there's still a population of pond snails within their tank and a very small species that I don't know (a little bigger than Acroloxus lacustris and looking like a ramshorn snail). These small snails don't cause impactation and injuries.

I raised a surprise egg more by luck than actually knowing what I was doing  (the egg hitchhiked home on a plant - the plant also was infested with small snails...) these snails soon established themselves in the tiny tank & when the little axolotl was growing up the only thing it seemed to be eating was the jelly like snail eggs - lucky for me, because I had no idea what I was doing till later on - so I consider my little one self raised on snail eggs & baby snails :)
She's now a big girl & a very fussy eater (but that's another story ;) lol)

I hope yours find the jelly snail eggs delicious - there's nothing better than producing your own free food :D
