For a very limited time (and it works best at a pH of around 8.2 or so if I rememeber correctly). There are better and more efficent ways to control phosphorus like using fast growing plants and harvesting out the plants while making sure that there is sufficent iron to support the plant growth.
Phosphate (PO4) is another algae and plant nutrient that is always being added to the aquarium via food particles. If the phosphate is not removed or bound up then it can build up in the system causing problems.

Joel , your 'lighter' paramesotriton is a P. chinensis. I presume the other ones might be fuzhongensis or hongkongensis.
 
Henk, I'll post it in the common species section and ask them to confirm it.
