My axolotl tank

Sorry Jarred, I have no experience with sand except the past week.

My pH normally high and I didn't want it to raise any higher so I selected a sand that is aquarium safe and wont raise the pH.

Perhaps others can give you some advice on sand types. You could also check the "tank setups, filters and substrate" folder and see if there is any more info there.

I would be interested in what type of sand you select and how it works out

Good news. Went out today and picked up some 'red' aquarium sand. It's not red like the decorative ones you see around in places, it is a natural look red. The lady at the LFS said it is better than the pure white sand they also had in stock because the white is more susceptible to algal growth if sunlight is directed on it. I am not sure if this is true or not because I have never heard about that happening.???????. What do you think?

Anyway, I put the sand in the tank and the water is still a little cloudy. When I get my new axies on Saturday I'll post a pic in the Axie Gallery. The set up is only basic cause its a temporary home for them.

Oh and I just tested the pH and it appears to be unaffected. So the sand is working out well for me.

Keep testing the pH once a week or so it would probably be a more gradual climb if it is going to raise the pH.

I rinsed the sand before using (not easy rinsing sand) once in the tank the water stayed cloudy for about 24 hours was totally clear in 36 hours.

Algae will grow on any color sand, but it would be much easier to see on white or light colors. You don't need direct sun to grow algae, it will grow under normal aquarium lighting too.

Good luck with your new axolotls

I will be watching for their pictures.

Ive have also got sand in my tank and in the 6 months of having it, I have not found any algae growth on it (but that may have something to do with the axies charging around)

And yeah I cant wait for pictures of your new ones!!

Thanks for the tips guys. The water is now clear and because its a new tank I test pH every day. I'll keep a watch out for a gradual increase in th pH.

Oh, those picks are just so nice..More pleace? ;)
I'm just doing the set up of my own axolotl tank, there will be some litle axies soon.
Only for 1-2 months in ~80 liter aquarium, then tey will move to 190 liter tank, and I have to do all again.

But now, in the 80 liret I have black sand, it's just so pretty. ^^ And my golden/yellow babies will show up wery well.. <3

(I'm sorry of my bad english..)
