Perhaps look into getting a sponge filter and an air pump from big als:
Hydro Sponge Filter

This will add a bit more filtration, aeration, and something for them to hide under/climb on top of.

A testing kit is a definite must have. At least for PH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate as those are the basics of ensuring your water quality is ok before putting anything live in your tank whether it be axos or fish.

I also noticed you live in Hamilton.
Check out Hydro-Sponge V [For tanks up 125 gallons]

You can place an order online and pick up from their warehouse to avoid shipping costs. They are located in Hamilton/Stoney Creek as well, and their prices are much better than Big Als.

sponge filters are fantastic, and highly underrated I think, they provide great filtration along with regular water changes and help create a healthy environment for your axies. couple that with some hardy plants and your golden.

it will also aerate and filter the water without creating much current at all, a huge plus when keeping axies.

as for hides, they don't have to be fancy, try searching your yard for some rocks, and have a "play" and see if you can stack them into a cave, then cement them together with blobs of aquarium grade sealant. all it will cost you is a tube of sealant, (usually less than $10, well were I live anyway) and some time in the garden.
