Hey all,

I’m having a concern with my Melanoid axolotl. I noticed today while I was feeding him and saw that his back toes look pink and a bit swollen. I’m not sure if this is a case of red leg syndrome? Can anyone give me any suggestions? There are 2 axolotls living together in a 55 gallon tank and thought maybe the other had maybe possibly tried biting its leg, but now I’m concerned.

Thank you!

Yes, almost sure its toe was bitten.
It's a minor wound which may heal well, except if the tankmate bites it again and again...

Your "melanoid" shouldn't have any iridophore. Looks like a wildtype.

He’s always been like this, never been completely Matt black. Thank you for responding so quickly! I’ll keep an eye out to make sure it doesn’t continue happening. It was pretty alarming but today it seems a bit better the swelling has already come down quite a bit.

Bite injury or possibly due to a bacterial film if your using a bare bottomed tank, if you are wipe it down when cleaning as it can cause toe infections.
