I rehomed a juvenile axolotl today, to say I'm shocked by her (call everything female until proven otherwise! :p) current appearance/health would be an understatement.
I've never personally seen an axolotl so deathly underweight. I was told by the previous owner she was part of a clutch they had hatched themselves and was having trouble finding homes for them all. For the sake of possibly hundreds of other baby's, I hope this was not the case. However, she has already eaten today and is looking rather happy in her nursery tank - I hate calling them quarantine tanks! She's a baby, she has a nursery :D I've called her angel as so far she's proving to be one :3 Here's hoping she'll put on a ton of that much needed weight and thrive!

(This one makes me sad :()

Oh my gosh ur ryt bout her weight bless her. Well im sure angel is now in a Loving home thats going to pick the pieces up well. Congratulations on your new arrival :) lol enjoy her xx

:( oh dear - makes my inner Italian mama kick in "oh you're too skinny!! Eat! Eat! Make me happy!"

Hope this little angel picks up fast - such a cutie :D - I had no clue they could get that thin 0.0 you are a good egg for taking her in Neeka <3

Thankyou everyone. Most of my axolotls are rehomes, previously kept on gravel and fed mealworms (GRRRRR!!) I'm either crazy or care too much lol! I've just never seen one so young, so underweight.

Are mealworms bad for them? Mine are given bloodworm and brine shrimp but heard meal worm was good i was going to get some? X

They're ok as a treat every once in a while but as a staple - no way! Axolotls can't digest their exterior skeleton.

Omg! I am shocked! And im tempted to give it the slice of chocolate
cake i have infront of me. it sure needs it more than I do.

You are awesome! Xxx

I know the temptation to just sit there feeding her all day is over powering! I'm like "mmm yum yum, you like worms? have another one....and another....this will be your 35th!! :proud:" while my biggens are sitting looking at me with hatred in their eyes due to only getting fed 3 times a week. Greedy axolotls.

Lol, they can really act jealous when one gets a worm and the other don't. Then the other nips the leg or tail of the one that's eating the worm.
Weird jealous gill things with feet and stuff. Weird things...

My youngest are the worst, they just whizz around the tank gumming everything at feeding time - such dimwits! My big boy is terrifying, he has this awful dead stare that must send the message "come near me when I'm eating and I will leave you 3 legged." Terminator of the axolotl world! "Axolotlavita, baby."

Hopefully she'll thrive in her new home.

Try using butter as a gutload for your worms (just kidding!).

Ok so far in this post she's been offered chocolate cake, buttered worms, next it will be pies! I'm trying to get her healthy not turn her into jabba the hut

Hi,

What would you recommend for 'fattening' purposes? My two were really skinny when I got them, they have gained some weight but are still too thin :(. One didn't eat for bit when I first brought them home and looked a bit puffy around the abdomen, s/he has since passed a large quantity of (as my boyfriend terms it) 'the substrate of doom' and 'deflated'(damn you aquarium shops with your 'death trap' tanks ;)). They will only eat every 3 days, have tried more frequently and they refuse the food although I do offer food everyday on the off chance. They currently get a cube of frozen blood worms each and some axolotl pellets every 3 days (I am trying to educate them re: earth worms but they are a bit slow on the uptake!). Is it worth supplementing with some 'high fat' treats for a bit? They are 4.5 - 5 inches long at the moment.

Thanks

(p.s. yours looks a real sweetie, hope she's 'better' soon)

Waxworms are a good fatty treat.

Thankyou, she is a darl'

As Kaysie said wax worms are really high fat so are a good source for putting on weight. My girls currently on chopped earthworm and bloodworm daily. Approx the same size as yours. If they're choosing to eat only 3 times a week, that's not your fault! A drop in temperature has probably had an effect as well - I don't know about your end but its cold up here!. Keep trying with the earthworms (frustrating when they're refusing, I know!) ,chop them if needs be, but if an axolotls hungry, they will (usually) eat what's given to them, even if not a preference of theirs.

I will keep trying with the earth worms and get some wax worms ASAP - thank you both

( p.s it's ruddy freezing down here too!)

Hi,

How is she now ? It's better ?

Post some more photos :)

Regards

Hiya, she's doing better thank you  Has already put on some of the weight and seems happy in herself. She's been moved to her "forever" tank today so is just re-adjusting to that. Hopefully I can get some pictures of her looking great within the next couple of days!

You're feeding her with what?
I usually feed my axolotls with shrimp and tubifex :)

Hope to see pictures of her chubby soon xD
