Keeping Axies for my first time

Hi fried noodle thats the thing with sand it will settle but you may need to get your axies into a holding tank while it does only a couple of days.

Good Luck

I have the same filter (smaller size due to smaller tank) and it can be turned down nice and low so very little water movement.

I'm still cycling so I don't have any axies yet :( I'm going to get some when summer is over as its too hot at the moment.

UPDATE: My tank is starting to clear up again so I've put everything back in. It doesn't look as pretty anymore :( but I'm willing to put up with that for easier cleaning. I'll put another piece of heart in tonight and I will test my water tomorrow.

I know what you mean about "pretty looking" . We get people over that smile at the axolotls with the sand in their tank and then sort of look disappointed when they see the bare floor tanks and ask when we're going to finish "decorating", ie putting in nice looking substrate. :D

Ok, these are my latest test results:

Temp:26c
pH: 7.o
Ammonia: 0.25ppm
Nitrite: 2.0ppm
Nitrate: 5.0ppm

So my temp is really high but I'm working on a homemade water cooler, I'll post more on that later. My ammonia has gone down and my nitrite has gone up, do these look normal? And I've finally got a Nitrate reading :D. Would that mean my tank is cycled or not untill my ammonia/nitrite levels are zero?

One more thing thats been on my mind is that even if my tank finishes cycling, I wont be getting my axie untill summer is over or I untill get a cooler. This means I will have to keep putting Ammonia sources into my tank right?

You're on track. Once your Nitrite and Ammonia reach zero, you've successfully cycled! If you want to have a continuous source of ammonia, I suggest a goldfish. Or you can continue to add bits of meat.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
