Juvie Marbled Newt

"Clean" has a different meaning when dealing with terrariums.

Dirt has an amazing ability to break down wastes in a natural manner. Every 3-12 months (depending on how many animals are in the tank), you scrape off the top layer of dirt and replace it. If the tank has a water dish, obviously that needs to be cleaned out every few days.

Thanks.

Only problem is, no matter what I do the moss has a quick rate of yellowing, so I have to replace all the moss about once every 1 1/2 months. And when I do that, I usually do a full tank clean, as it can't hurt and is better for the animals.

I've had a marbled newt for a year now, got it when he had just morphed (I think thats the term). I can't tell if its male or female yet. Newt keeping isn't very common in England, I can't get hold of blackworms or bloodworms in my area so 'Axle' (the newt) has grown up mainly on small fishing tackle worms, micro crickets and more recently wax worms. I've never used a feeding bowl, I just place the food infront of him with my fingers. Is that wrong?

Also, Simon, love to know what plant you have there in your tank. Does it do well in there? I think my mum has a potted plant just like it that I could take a cutting from.

Billie, just for the record...newt keeping is big in England!

Sorry for late reply Billie. I actually don't know what plants they are, but I've never had any problems with them. Maybe some sort of ivy? The reason I use a dish for worms is that my newts refuse to eat in front of me. I also distribute pinheads throughout their terrarium, for them to hunt.

I have five juvey marbleds too-mine are eating teeny crickets at the moment. I am keeping them on kitchen towel damped and scrunched up, with cardboard tent hideouts covering moss clumps.
