Here it is- advice appreciated. These photos are a month old, after the tank had been cleaned (recently, not immediately after). The condensation on the tanks sides is from cooling packs.

Nice tank! I have four juvie Marbled newt's myself. I don't keep ice packs by the tank like that, we just keep the air on. I tried the food dish but the small earthworms kept getting out and going in the dirt, so now I take the newt's out and put them in a tub with a little water and the worms and you can see them eat. What do you feed yours and were did you get them? I got mine from Michael Shrom, He a really good guy.

Here in NM, it usually gets hot enough that cooling packs are necessary. How big are yours, Charles? Mine have only grown about 3/4-1 inch in 2 months, after I got them. I got mine from Michael Shrom too. I feed them blackworms in the dishes and pinhead crickets. They never eat in front of me, but from when I feed them at night to the morning they've usually cleaned out both dishes, and I know that not very many if any worms escape, or the tank would stink.
Good luck with yours

I'm not sure how big mine are, but 3 of the 4 look about the same size as yours. I tried to feed them blackworms but they never eat them. You should try to feed them some small earthworms, mine love them more then any thing, even crickets. I get my worms at a creek near my house, I can get all the worms I need, all I have to do is flip some rock's in the bank.

How long have you had yours? Smaller earthworms are generally not available for sale here, and since it's usually so dry there's no place to collect them, but I'll keep looking. What kind of setup do you keep yours in?

To help keep the blackworms inside the water dish, add some small pebbles (just not so small that the newts could swallow them). You could also try some small cut-up earthworm pieces in the water dish - the Canadian nightcrawlers they sell at bait shops and Walmart would work.

I got mine on 6/28/06 and I keep mine in a 2.5gal. tank for now. I have my tank setup like yours but without the plant's.

Mine are in a 5 gal, and I bought them some time in mid may. Jen, what do they look like when full, because mine seem to have a substantial amount of girth around the stomach all the time, even when they haven't eaten for over a week now because the dumb pet shop has no crickets or blackworms. They don't really try and get away when I pick them up to check to see how they're doing. What's up? I hope that's just because the tank is pretty cold.

Hard to say how normal that is, Simon. If they are well-fed you may indeed see no difference after a week without food. Whether they "fight" when picked up depends on how they are picked up and what mood they are in. Can you get a close-up photo of the newts?

Mine don't try to run from me either. A week without food, man that would suck. I know that newt's can go a long time without food, but I try to put myself in there place. I feed mine 2 to 3 times a week. The 3 out of 4 newt's I have are a little chubby, I have a little one that I am working on to try to get him a little fatter.

I refill their blackworm dish every day when I have worms, and I feed them pinhead crickets once every 4-6 days. Also, what do you think it means when they're pretty cold when I pick them up? I'll try to get a close up photo, but I'll have to wait until my mom's ready to download our Pacific NW photos. I found some great sallies, and I have some pics

I don't keep mine that cold.
Can't wait to see the photo's of the sallies you found.

It's pretty hard to strike a good temp balance without creating an enormous electricity bill.

I've been doing that for some time, but the tank gets too warm. I'm still working on it though.

Good luck, with keeping your tank cool. Are yours still to young to tell if they are male or female, mine are.

Yep, way to young. They're only a bit more than a third of their full size! Good luck with yours too.

Nevermind. Animals feeding healthily again, pictures not necessary.

Hey you guys use dirt in your setups, how do you clean your tanks?
