I've got eggs too!

"Freezing is only acceptable if the amphibian is small (<40 grams), is already anesthetized, and the freezing is immediate"

Putting them in boiling water would probably kill them faster (they should be anesthetized first though).

Ever considered an axolotl egg omelette? I mean, if you don't want your axo's to eat them, why waste them. You could discover a new culinary sensation that helps revitalize the axolotl population.

what about Axo Caviar? A lot less wasteful than salmon roe, as an axolotl lays multiple times through her life.

How the heck anesthetize an egg!
and i think eating them(LOL) is worse than freezing them, and i think freezing them would be more kind than boiling them.
so im going to freeze them before i just throw em away to dry out.

Umm folks,
the reason freezing is unacceptable for amphibians is that the nervous system can still detect the freezing as pain. Early stage egg development does not have the nervous system to feel pain so freezing is an acceptable method for disposing of eggs ( I would think until stage 35 or so (Harrison, 1969). Late stage eggs and larva should not be frozen unless anesthetized.

And just for political correctness, the last time I checked murder was defined as the to kill a human being unlawfully with malice forethought (see the Oxford English Dictionary).

Wow!!! i can see gill buds on the eggs!
im so excited i have never dealt with axo eggs before!

when was it your eggs were laid? cause i cant see gills on mine which is what im wanting because im trying to keep them cool to delay the hatching process. mine are 8 days old.

the majority of them have changed shape but there are few which are completely round in their original form from when they were first laid. So not sure if these are unfertilised eggs or something.

My eggs are nine days old, tonight anyway. Laid on the seventeenth I think. Its so cool! The water is about 20 degrees C oday, its afternoon so its a bit warmer. The rest of the day its more around 18 degrees. My adults are likin' it! its usually warmer in the tank but they seem pretty happy now that its cold!

good luck with your eggs jenny!

good luck with yours to!

im keeping mine cool by keeping them in the spare room with the window open. however the radiator in there is on a bit and so comes on twice a day but the turny thing is stuck so i cant turn it off.

not sure what the temp of my water is though.

do you have any eggs which are still round like when they were first laid, heather?

nope none are still round
but some they look like they have defined tails now!! and some are getting their gill buds, and some look like little foot balls (not soccer balls)they are all different so its so cool to watch them grow!

Jenny - If all your eggs were laid the same day I would remove the ones that are still round and not developing.

Yes, remove all eggs that have not developed past the first stages ie, have stayed round.

This is so you can keep fungus down, and hopefully hatch all the babies you kept.

the non developed eggs havent gone bad though. ive removed the bad ones.

the eggs are well on their way now - its so cool.

i found two extra ones on my filter in my tank and i sucked em off with a tukey baster and they were squirming around madly in their egg. so they are alive at least.
