Blingbling laid eggs yesterday... I wish the fine people of Boise Idaho LOVED axolotls.

Why, cause then you could sell them to them? I wish i lived in Boise Idaho just to have a chance to buy some.

Congrats Cynthia, are you going to raise any? do you know who's the father? please post more pics if you get a chance, i love looking at your axies!

yes you must post pictures when they are little, maybe they'll be as cute as Hailz's babies in her avatar.

cool,that does look very christmasy,lol
you have such neat names for your axies!

Hailz - The father is Narkezy (a black melanoid). I doubt I will be raising any. I don't have homes lined up for them and they are usually hard to find good homes for.

I will probably be listing the eggs in the give away section if they are fertile.

Awww! Congrats, Cynthia! I look forward to the day I find eggs in my tank

I just hope I am well prepared

Jordan - I am not going to raise any of them right now. Instead of wasting them I am feeding them (the eggs) to goldfish.

It's an acceptable method of disposal. If you freeze/alcohol/feed the eggs to something before they start to develop, they don't have any nerves and can't feel it. Food chain.

It's what I would have done if I didn't have the time or the money to look after the eggs. They're a lot of work and expensive to look after.

still i don't like that option. I'm not for it personally, im not saying that everybody has to be like me.

Those with qualms about culling and thinning the herd should not breed their animals. I raised 8 (eight, as in under 10) larvae, and still have 4 of them that I can't find homes for. I couldn't imagine trying to raise hundreds.

Joan - with your experience, raising baby Axies, what is the likely-hood of them surviving? I am no where near ready for my axolotls to mate and neither are they but I would like to get an estimate on their survival rate.

I said in one post that I was thinking perhaps I might raise 100 of the babies thinking that some of them would probably die and some would survive.

If the likely-hood of them surviving if I do everything I can to properly take care of them is pretty high, then I would have to make my call at about 20 or 40 babies.Anything else I would have to Cull. There are a few shops here that I trust that I talked to a while back and all of them are looking for people to sell them Axolotls and I told them eventually I will breed mine and they said they would like to have some of the babies. I have also been thinking that I would like to donate some of the babies to schools for biology classes, science classes, and even maybe some just as class pets to educate children. I would also give them the address to this website

I want to learn everything I can first, and then maybe by next christmas 2006 my Axolotls will be ready. I think I'll be ready by then too lol.

well thats good rheann that you admit you're not ready. I'd hate to see somebody breed, unprepared for anything and i mean anything and end up killing babies because of that. Yes raising 100 is pretty crazy, but im sure near 50% will die, unless you turn out to be an awesome breeder. Good Luck to you rheann when your axolotls are ready.

If you've got food ready, and you keep water parameters correctly, you should have a close to 100% survival rate (not 50%, as Jordan says). Out of the 10 fertilized eggs I kept, I raised 8. One starved as he hatched prematurely and their food had not arrived yet, and one had a genetic deformity and died shortly after hatching. I'm still trying to get rid of 2 of them. Remember that axolotls are illegal in California, and you might have a hard time passing them off to the pet shop.

It’s a little bit of a different story when you are keeping more then eight, you may also have some that may be quite genetically weak and just die from that.
