Hello,
I currently have a 30 length x 25 depth x 27 height tank with undergravel filter and stone substrate it currently has 2 angelfish but would this be suitable for an Axolotl????}

Also would a terracotta pot be okay to use as a hiding place for an Axie if so do i need to wash it and soak it in Conditioned water ????

you cant have axies with fishes.

and make sure ur gravel isnt to big, the best thing is to use sand or small gravel. you can use a pot but make sure its all clean and without any toxic paint or something..

Also, angel fish are tropical, and axolotls prefer cold water. And undergravel filters are a pain in the butt with axolotls, as their poo tends to 'vaporize' and become a powder that needs to be sucked out from under the plate.

Maja i know that they cannot go with other fish adn that angels are tropical i'm going to give them to a friend who has a larger tank and or sell them to my local fish store.
I'M keeping the Filter and substrate but i will do a massive total water change of my fish tanks water, rocks and filter before putting my new axie in....
Thanks for your thoughts

Also would sand stuff up an under "Gravel" filter because the stones i have are too small and i fear that the Axolotl will it them.....

Thanks for the replies but i need to know if the tanks size is alright

i imagine it would not stuff up the filter as such but it would neva settle, i advise u get a different filter, i reccomend a overhang filter, but make sure the filter you get isnt to powerful that it will stress the axies, you can tell if they're stressed because there gills will tilt forwed.

Thanks but i already know about the whoel Under Gravel filter deal and im willing to do that because the regular water changed clean it out.
But no one has answered if my Tank is big enough 30cmx25cmx27cm

Please tell me

ok, IMO that tank size is definintly not big enough, i had a 60cmx30cmx30 which i think was just big enough, now i have upgraded to 3 footer tank. how old and big is the axie your getting?. the more room the better and the easier to keep clean.

merry x-mas.

Thank you merry x-mas too.
The Pet Store has them in small 20 by 20 by 20 tanks and they look fine they are only babies though and i was wondering if Axolotls get stunted by the tank size.
Thanks

yes most likly, babies can be put in tanks that size but as they grow they will need a bigger tank, but remember pet stores arnt always right as a lot of people on this forum know. pet stores often overcroud there tanks.

Ok but how long will it stay small also will the Axolotl's growth be stunted by small tank size.

im not sure about if his growth will be stunted. they grow to full size in about 1-2 years.

Ok thankyou i will ask the local pet store about the stunting question thank you Alex for helping me and also all others who posted on this thread

Update:
Well i asked the local fish store and they said axolotls growth does stunt so i will have a roughly 8in Axolotl may upgrade though THANKYOU

Are you saying that you are planning to leave your axolotl in a 30cm long tank, even when fully grown? If you are don't because it is much too small. You need to buy a larger tank as your axolotl grows.

OI Jarred listen i said they get stunted which means it will grow to an adequeate size for it's habitat DUH !!!!
So read all of the posts before jumping in ans saying somthing stupid

even if an axies growth does stunt depending on the size of tanks etc do you really think thats fair on the creature to spend its entire life cramped?
also i wouldnt believe everything you get told at a petshop they dont tend to know much about axie care.

Rory,

You came to this site to ask if an aquarium 30cm long is adequate housing for an axolotl. You have your response, NO. I think not following the advice of the people who answered your post is the stupid thing. I did read all of the posts carefully before posting, as I wanted to be sure if I was interpreting you right. It turns out I did, so with the health of your future axolotl in mind I suggest when the axolotl grows larger to buy a tank about 60cm long. You can get a second hand tank this size cheap so not doing so would be selfish. If you do not have the funds or space to buy a larger tank then do not purchase an axolotl, simple as that.

Axolotl growth is probably not stunted by the size of the tank in which they live. However, with a large axolotl and a small tank, you're going to have water quality problems. Your axolotl is not going to have adequate space to poo, to hide, or to swim. You'll have a hard time regulating the water temperature, and your axolotl will be stressed. This will significantly decrease it's life span. 99% of all pet shops don't know squat about axolotls.
