Day 4

Ammonia: 0.25
Nitrite: 5.0+ (Off scale)
Nitrate: 80

your tank is cycling now, but please remove the axies into a container. Nitrite is very toxic and the level is much too high for their well-being. They can become a toxication.

Water change FAST. Or better yet as Mel Suggested, get them out of there until you get the water sorted out. Seriously bad dude. :(

Tina is RIGHT.

You can keep them in large plastic tubs while the tank cycles. Like underbed storage boxes or something.
They dont need a filter, just 100% water changes daily.

I did. 40%.

What's a dangerous level?

I have Nitrites at 0.5 now after the change. I was thinking of continuing to check every few hours and do another large water change tonight. Yeah?

do you no anyone with a already cycled tank you can empty your tank and use there water change water and ask them for half there filter material that should fix your problem right up just make sure there tank is very clean(free of parasites) fill one third of the tank with there water change water and then add the rest fresh that should fix your prob or alternativly if you have another tank this has already cycled but too small to take enough water out just take 1 cup of water out of it a day and add it to your tank and it will help the water cycle fast but be vigilent with water tests and changes good luck

Do you have a quarantine tank? I keep a 20L to hand just in case all the time, if not, you can pick up a 20L very cheep from a local store, just to keep them in for abit if needed. IMHO 'think they'll be fine' isn't good enough for me, I don't like to risk it.

You have said that they're showing no signs of stress, but just keep a very close eye on them at the least (just in-case).

even still I recommend picking up one of those cheep plastic tanks (Like the ones shops sell for goldfish starter kits).

Nitrate test kits can give false readings if you do not follow the directions precisely. Both bottles need to be shaken, especially the second bottle, which I think has to be shaken for at least a minute before adding drops to the solution. (I don't have the directions right in front of me.) Since your nitrates seem to be jumping drastically within a span of 24 hours, I would question the test kits before worrying about water quality. Make sure you follow the directions to the letter.
