This is the best picture i could get. I have added several silk plants. I have also hadded a few PVC pipes for them to hide in but as i stated the water is still murkey. I have also added a background as i was told it will help with the security of the axis...now i have only had them a week or so and the person whom i got them from helped me alot and i found out they are only juvinile. Am i doing something wrong here???????

Also i know they have gills it may be a stupid question but why do they go to the top and get a mouth of air if they have gills?

The tank looks good.

As for the murky, it could be from lots of things. Do you test for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrate? Your tank could still be cycling. Or you could just need to clean your filter and let the tank settle. Sometimes they get a little cloudy.

You don't need the light for the axolotls, as they are nocturnal and prefer it darker. It could be contributing to the murkiness (or making it look more murky).

Axolotls, while having gills, also possess rudimentary lungs. Some (more than others) prefer to go to the surface and gulp air. This is normal.

so am i over feeding them then? I am feeding 4 cubes every day of frozen blood worms. i do notice now alot of food on the sand

You're definitely overfeeding. As to amount of bloodworms to feed I can't say for sure but I am sure that feeding 4 thawed cubes everyday is too much.

Axolotls are normally fed every other day or so. You shouldn't be seeing large amounts of food after feeding time. If you do they should be cleaned up immediately to prevent them from dirtying the water. A turkey baster works wonders for this.

so how much doi you feed them and how often as they are only juvies

Feed them as much as they will eat in 15 minutes.

You'll start getting a feel for how much this is after a few feedings. That is, if you feed them, and they gobble everything up in 30 seconds, you can probably feed them a little more. Or if you feed them, and after 15 minutes, there's still a lot of food left over, you can feed them a little less.

How long are they? Do you know their age? Just curious

Both are about 7 Inches

Hi Amanda,

I would be cutting the feeding to about once every two or three days.

A good guide is to monitor the belly to ascertain if you are over or underfeeding. The belly should be about as wide as the head at the heads widest point - plump but not obese.

If the axolotl is looking too fat, cut the feeding to once every three days. If looking a little on the lean side, feed once every two days.

Don't let the axolotls con you into feeding them every day! They are the best beggars in town lol.

Edit: In looking at the photos, I would say once every three days! ;)

I believe that at 7 inches they should have reached sexual maturity. Have you noticed that their 'toe nails' are whiteish?

These are the best shots i can get of the feet is this what u mean about white nails

Dark shade axolotl's toe nails will go white to indicate sexual maturity. Pale axolotl's toe nails will go black to indicate same.

When breeding them however, it's best to wait until the axolotl is at least 18 months of age (particuarly the female as she will expend a lot of energy in producing and laying eggs and her own growth and development will be 'put on the back burner' while she is doing this - not good for her health).

Hey that's a great photo!!!

I agree with Jacq, while they are sexual mature (toe nails look white to me!!), you need to wait until they have 'grown up'. No teenage pregnancies hey! LOL
