Question: I just got given this axolotl

She has 3 gills one side and 2 the other is that a normal thing to happen. Can they lose a gill all together?

You're doing a great job and a wonderful thing saving this axolotl Rissa. I wish that all pet owners took the lives of their "little friends" as seriously as you do.

Her gills look like devil horns.

Well Done keep up the good work :)

Aww:( poor baby.. I'm glad you saved her and are taking such better care of her.
Both my male (I'm about75% positive they're male) axolotls are 10 months old, one of them will eat worms whole, but my other one won't. After introducing them to worms, my melaniod, Mowgli ate a whole one once. Then he would not take any food from me after that. So I cut the worms in half and he was all over them :)
I noticed that he had a much harder time than my white axolotl, Lilo, who just gobbled them up with no problem. But Mowgli took a few minutes to get his whole ones down, they would always move around a lot and he just couldn't eat them. But now he's back to eating again. Sometimes it takes a lil trial and error.

Thank you all for your great comments and helping me with getting this one better. I will keep you all update on what's happening with her.

what a difference 5 days makes.

Please keep us posted. I would love to see how s/he looks a month, six months, and a year from now.

I think she looks better too! Keep up the good work

How is she doing now?

She is doing better. She is eating beef heart now. She even comes towards it now and snatches it of the twisers. Where before I had to just about stick the food in her mouth to take it, I havent seen much change in her gills. But I see her everyday so I cant really tell. I will upload some more pics of her for you guys to see how she is going?

She's looking better. Is beefheart the only thing you're offering?

I'm impressed. Your doing an excellent thing here, Rissa.

What is her name?

Oh my god! Poor thing!

Can I say that she's looking so much better! Her skin isn't all red and blotchy anymore. I hope you can help her get her gills back :(

Keep up the amazing work!

Thanks for that I'm trying my best. Do you know anything I can do to get her gills to grow back? I'm hoping they get a little bigger and start getting some feathers. One of my males I got with hardly any gills and they have grown back not long. I know she's 7 years old I dont know if that makes a difference
