I can't identify the exact species of my rescued newt!

you did say you got them in seattle right?? seattle is in western washington and you can find granulosa right there in the city. i have before. and ive lived in washington for 12 yrs and ive never seen granulosa for sale there. and since washingtons herps are protected, it would be illegal to sell there. im betting the kids caught them and they are granulosa for sure.

are you saying that you found newts in the city of seattle? Not for sale but roaming around??

"seattle is in western washington and you can find granulosa right there in the city. i have before"

at seahawks stadium or pikes place market? should I check at the new stadium, like at the bathroom? What the heck are you talking about?? seattle is a trashdump, I don't even see healthy dogs there...

"ive lived in washington for 12 yrs and ive never seen granulosa for sale there"

ok, so just wild ones you "collected" then, wow, I missed out living out in the country on union hill, on a presereve where I never saw one...

"it would be illegal to sell there. im betting the kids caught them and they are granulosa for sure."

You should realize that 2 afro-american kids, from the ghetto, whose mom works at taco bell(this is true) don't go out collecting newts all that often..
I know it's suppoesed to be illegle, but I have heard different information from diffrent sources, and the fact is that he is most likly a T.G. and was bought at the petco in greenlake who admitted selling him, which the manager said "oh yeah, last summer we brought in some paddletails, we cant get them anymore, you can try again, we sometimes get them in."

I hope to god they are from a breeder

Do you personally know these kids because you say that you know that their mom works a Taco Bell. If you do know them why don't you ask where they got them in the first place?

Not to come across as oversensitive about racial issues, but what does it matter where these kids come from, where their mother works or what ethnicity they are?

i'm with dot on this one... and i think virtually all kids would inherently find a newt pretty cool and want to keep it if they happened upon it somewhere, especially in a city. i've never personally seen a newt in seattle, but i know they are pretty common all over that area of washington so it doesn't surprise me at all that a couple kids would find one. kids are pretty amazing that way.

wow jeff....sorry to have gotten you flustered. yes, i have found taricha granulosa IN SEATTLE!! and yes, i could see some kids finding them and wanting to keep them...i certainly have. i dont know what i said to offend you, but you didnt have to get defensive. i wasnt trying to be rude or say that you were wrong about anything. i never doubted you. i was merely creating a scenario that COULD HAVE happened. but if you say the pet store admittied to selling it...im sorry for butting in... half the pet stores couldnt tell a taricha from a firebelly newt anyways.... so, im sorry for saying whatever i did to offend you... i certainly hope you can put this behind you. you came on here asking for help. i made a very possible scenario and you trashed on me. i was merely stating what i have personally seen there from herping there for years. what point were you trying to make anyways...

Im not upset, I just get tired of repeating myself. Im not being racist at all, I just know for a fact they bought them and I was just making the point that there is no way in hell they found 2 of these in greenlake.

They are not common by any means, in fact, I am really upset they are not protected. I have lived in the area in question for almost 20 years an never saw a single one in the wild, city or petshop.

Sorry if I get snippy, but I swear I have gotten so many posts from poeple who say such vauge things, or just don't read carefully enough.
I can't immagine finding a T.g. in seattle in this day and age that was wild collected. The kids I talked about had no knowlege at all of newts and would have killed them in the august heat in a short time, So I doubt they are smart enough to find a stream in washington that isn't flowing with gasoline and cigerettes.

No offense, but seattle is about the worst place in the northwest to live other than portland. I can't empasize this enough, finding any living creature here not from a trashcan or petshop is impossible.

i know man, i lived there for 12 years. ive seen it. its nasty, but things learn to survive there. anyhoo, no hard feelings. next time ill just more thoroughly read the posts. how is the little one doing anyways?? good luck jeff

He is soo big, I am amazed how much hey grew in a few months. He is starting to get quite lazy however, and allthough I feed him a good diet, doen't seem to interested in swimming around like he used too. I suppose this is probably normal with maturity, I can't blame him, he knows how the how operation goes at this point and always seems to "wake up" when I am feeding the others... lazy newt

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
