How To Care for Morphed Axolotls

Yes the addition of lime will bring the pH back up but this may not be the best solution as you will have to monitor the pH of the substrate to make sure you didn't under or over adjust the pH (there can be significant variations in the pH between batches of peat/sphagnum (as low as 4 in some batches I tested)).

Yeah no worries; ill turf that peat and sphagnum out then.

I'm having a bastard of a time finding live moss to put in there; is there anything else you'd recommend to the low phosphate soil I've currently got? Leaves perhaps?

Typically mosses do require a lot more light than people believe. They do best with really strong light. A trick to growing a good moss you can then plant in the enclosure is to mix a 50/50 mixture of peat moss with sharp sand. Pot up in shallow pots and place in a humid enclosure (I use a 10 gallon tank with a glass lid) with strong flourescent lighting. Within about 2-3 months the pots will be covered with a moss that can be seperated out into plugs and planted into the enclosure where it should spread. This prevents the issues with the pH of the peat due to the small amount.

oooh i like the sound of that. Im having a hard time finding moss, believe it or not. The nurseries and pet stores dont carry it!
