How many paddle tails can be kept in a 20g long? The set up will be fully aquatic, filtered by a Zoo Med 501. It will have atleat five hides, two three caves and and three flower pots. The set up will look similar to set up Ravenous (good movie by the way) has seen here: http://www.caudata.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49418

I would recommend only two newts in that size aquarium. Paddle-tails newts can be quite aggressive so you may find that you can only keep one in your aquarium as it will not cohabitate with any other conspecifics. It is necessary to entertain the possibility that any pair you purchase will fight and separate housing will have to be provided for each.

Even if the newts seem to do well together they should always be monitored closely as signs of stress may be more subtle than actual wounds. Fighting may break out spontaneously as some unnoticed trigger causes aggressive and territorial behavior.

Again, I would recommend a maximum of two animals and also say that being able to acquire housing for the second is a necessity.

Paddletails have been described as the pit bulls of the newt world. The safest thing would be to have only 1 paddletail. Two will fit, and may get along, or not, it's hard to predict. If you opt for two, be sure to provide lots of hiding places, such as rock piles, broken pots, plants, etc.

alot of people say don't keep 2 but i have kept 2 in a ten gallon tank for 3 years with no problems. there's even dwarf frogs in my tank and the newts haven't had any problems with them.

Frogs with paddletails? That's quite innappropriate- mixing species is bad practice and I'm sure that the paddletails will eat the frogs sooner or later. By the way, what temps to you keep these animals at?

Are you sure they are paddletails? If they are...the frogs won´t last forever...unless you happen to have some kind of extremely tame variety of newts.

they must be tame because i can tell you i have not had 1 problem? and i'm 100% there paddle tails.

I have two paddle tail newts and 2 dwarf frogs living together, and im planning to make a new tank soon, a little larger, because they are now with 2 fire belly toads sharing a 40 gallon tank, so i will let the paddletails alone, and the rest of the pacific animals together.
