Help! Newts and Fire Belly toads

I purchased them from a reptile specialty store out here in the Bay Area. I was recently in Petsmart though, and saw a tank full of FBT's and there was a dead one floating around (and when I went in the next day it still hadn't been removed...eww!) I probably wouldn't buy amphibians from them...

You need to go in to the store and complain to the manager about their care of these FBT's. Having a dead animal in the tank for any length of time is just asking for trouble. All sorts of icky bacteria that someone is going to end up taking home.

The sad thing is, I don't know if I have ever walked into a PetSmart with cfb's that DIDNT have at least one dead one in there. They are pathetic. Probably Petco too.
I also emphasize not having more than one paddletail in there unless you have a large tank. VERY territorial in my experiences.
The tail waving is most likely a male wanting to breed.

I'm pretty sure that even if you went back to PetSmart and complained, the managers wouldn't actually do anything. These types of stores don't address health issues until the media or the law does it for them. It's sad, because people can become animal specialists in these stores without actually having any training in the department.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
