Help needed for a wounded axolotl

I'd stick him in the fridge now. Reduce the chance of anything taking hold in the warmer water temps.

And its weird, but I was just wondering what the time is where you are, Sarah. OUt of interest, it's 12.00 noon on Monday here.

Funny! I love the time changes all over the world. I am an Army brat, so I lived in Korea as well. That was a big time change and hard to adjust to at first.

Any idea what time they use on this site? Greenwich Mean Time??

Duh, just answered my own question by scrolling to the bottom of the welcome page.

It is 9:30pm on Sunday here lol. But just go ahead and stick him in the fridge like Anne said, it kinda of slows everything down for them and relieves stress on them. But glad we got everything sorted out with ya. Good luck on everything tomorrow

Grant, stresscoat is a wonderful dechlorinator. Just as effective as any of the others.

It is? The Stress Coat they sell at my local pet store does not dechlorinate. I'm sure because I checked it before because I was looking into it. But you know more than I do. Maybe I was thinking of a different brand?

Grant, am I correct in thinking it's about 6.30 am over there? You're keen

Hey guys, I put Sammy in the fridge last night. He is alive and doing well (opposed to what my mother said, "He'll freeze, how would you like to be put in the fridge overnight?"

His water is awfully cold this morning though, is this still alright?

Yup, its fine. In their native habitat, axolotls come from lakes on top of mountains - that would get pretty cold. They can handle the cold temps really well. DO NOT put in the freezer however.

No, I didn't put him in the freezer. How many days should I keep him in the fridge, just until the spots heal? Also, my brother's friend is a technology whiz and he is coming over today to try and take better pictures and help me post them for all to see.

Until he's looking better. As far as I can make out (and without photos yet) this is all just a precaution but I meant to ask how big was the pleco and how big is the sucker mark?

The pleco was about an inch and a half long (one of the bigger ones I have seen) and the marks range from about (this is a bad comparison) the size of one's fingernail on the ring finger if it is cut very short (this is the biggest) to about half that size. Sammy would shake him off quite often and I just thought it was natural so I kind of wiped Sammy off thinking I would eliminate some of the algae on him?! Then, one night I walked in the room to find this had happened. Kind of ironic though: the pleco hurt Sammy, but when I took the pleco out of the tank and put him into a bowl for the night, the cat got him. He is now dead. Made me wish I had never said anything bad. I'm an animal freak!

Great, now I wish I'd never asked - poor little Pleco! I'm glad that the pleco wasn't any bigger, they can grow to quite a large size I believe. Those marks don't sound too big.

Yeah, I felt pretty bad for him too. But, no, I don't think the size of the wounds were what worried me as much as the white 'stuff' that appeared the next day. Maybe it is just the skin flaking off to start regrowth or maybe it is already beginning to regrow? I don't have any idea, but it looked almost like a fungus or bacteria of some sort so I just wanted to be sure! I would die if something happened to him b/c of my lack of kowledge/experience.

I am going to give him a salt bath tonight when I can get the aquarium salts. I sent my dad after a test kit, a thermometer of some type (for the water temps.), and aquarium salt. I have to work until 6 pm so I won't be able to go get all this. Oh, and I read where someone wrote that most pet stores will test water free. That would be great if there was a pet store around us!

We live about an hour from the nearest pet store. It stinks pretty badly!

Sarah - You said you wiped Sammy down? You should never wipe the slime coat off of your axolotl. You should not even touch their skin if you don't have to. The slime coat protects their skin from infections.

Maybe you might want to get some of that slime coat stuff for the water. If you wipe off his slime coat it makes him much more volnurable to disease, infection, and all kinds of bad stuff! And if that slime coat stuff does dechlorinate that would be even better. Just use it in moderation and follow the instructions.

I called Indiana University to order pellets for him and they told me to put some stress coat in the water with him but to take him out of the fridge. They said it was probably just shedding skin. They actually said to double the dose of stress coat. Instead of the usual 4 teaspoons, I put in 6 (I didn't really double it). They said it would not harm him. I am letting the water settle tonight though and will put him in it tomorrow. I sure hope I am doing something right for him now!
