HI
Im am new to the world of axolotls so all help would be greatly recieved.
Im due to pick up my axolotls a week on sunday. I have the tank all set up, filter, sand, not gravel etc... but my main worry at the moment is the thermometer in the water is reading 24 and doesn't seem to be going down, I know I cant keep them at this temp and I really don't want to stress them out, I live in london so its not like its always this hot but until the summer disappears I need all help to get the temp down. Ive read about ice bottles etc but im at work during the day so not going to beable to keep changing them :( please help

Well at first i got Aqua Fans, but there a little small.
I would go about to a Local Store and buy a Mini Clip on Fan.
Like the desk fans, but with a clip. I have mine and it brings my tank down about 3-5 degrres F.

really, just a normal little fan, cool, thanks. Ill go get one in the morning. im freaking out, I want everything to be perfect for their new home.

To be honest, mine hovers around 23-24 and they are fine.

Dan, If I am not mistaken you have raised yours in this temp. To avoid confusion, I just wanted to clarify that. I don't think it would be advisable to encourage someone else to attempt this as too many have experienced problems with higher temps.

@vampybabe - Personally, I have had some of mine stress and stop eating at temps above 20 so I would not risk high temps in this particular instance. I am hopeful that the fans work - just aim it so it blows across the surface and not directly down. Also, do you have a hood on your tank? Sometimes, replacing the hood with a screen top can cause a temp drop of 2-4 degrees by itself. How big is your tank? Larger volumes of water are easier to keep cool as well.

If the tank is near a window try moving it elsewhere. The heat will penetrate through the glass even with your blind closed. You could also drape a wet towel over your tank and have a fan pointing at it. I've heard this makes the air from the fan alot colder because of the water in the towel. I have actually done this with baby rabbits in summer it helps alot.

hi, the tanks got about 45 ltrs in it at the moment but is not full to the top, Ive got a normal kinda black thin metal hood on at the moment but the front flap is open on it, then theres a small sheet of glass before the hood light (lights not on tho)
i thought i would experiment this morning when I woke up and put a 1.5lt frozen bottle in to see how quickly the temp dropped, its been in there about 30 mins and the temps hardly moved, its weird it doesnt feel that hot in here.
the tanks the other side of the room away from the window and ive even closed mt curtains now to try and limit the amount of light coming in. gotta find some mini fans now.
just to make sure as well, I am right in thinking I should be doing 20% water changes daily until I put them in? I was hoping this might help drop the temp too.
gonna try the wet towel thing too. thanks guys, Im really glad this forum is here! :)

ok, now even more confused..... went into the aquarium shop to get more bits and mentioned the water problem and he said 24 is fine, I told him not, and he said his tanks are that temp and have always been fine.
no luck finding a fan but im gonna go into the main town tomorrow and search there. not convinced by the fish shop so going with you guys.
its dropped to 22, that could be the ice bottle i put in, im gonna keep an eye on it. took the hood off too as suggested :)

That's because he doesn't know what he's talking about. They usually don't. But they will make stuff up and say it with authority.

Do you have any fan at your place at all? If so.. Prop that bad boy up and let it blow. Turn on a ceiling fan if you have one. A small airstone can break the surface tension and help cool things quicker as well.

Good luck.

thats why im really glad this forums here, I just feel sorry for the ones bought from there that dont get properly looked after because of misguided info :(
Ive got a big desk fan. ill pile up the books and whack it on top, give that a go for now. oooh ill get an airstone too then tomorrow. anything it takes. I cant wait to get them next week but im nervous incase the tanks not ready.

I had the same problem with the temp, i moved my tank even more away from my window, got two airstones, took the hood off, had a couple of fans and used icebottles and still didnt get a decent temperature drop :p... What kind of filter do you have? If you have a canister filter then putting it in some ice might help it works for me but we dont have ice cubes anymore... I filled both of the ice trays up completly with water and ended up with huge blocks of ice... I put the filter in a bucket with a block of ice and keep repeating this, but make sure you refill the ice tray... This along with my door and windows being open (i closed the blind with just the top open) is the best thing that has worked for me so far as the ice in the bucket keeps the water cool and the window and door being open keeps my room cool which stops the temperature going back up... :D If you dont have a canister filter then dont take any notice of what i said but hope you sort it out, you will probably find something that works for you but the fans should work :D... And a guy at the petshop told my dad the exact same thing about 24 C being ok for them, so i had to sit my dad down and had to have another talk to him about axolotls and the temperature :p...

ok, well 16" desk fan made no diff :( temp only dropped to 22.
but I went to a new pet shop thats opened and ordered an aquarium fan £25 so im hoping that works, im picking it up next thurs.
Ive got a fluval2 filter, not sure if they are good or not???
still panicing tho :(

Hi vampybabe,

I have recently started having the same problem, but my axie seems fine with the change. I spoke to someone I know that works in a fish store, and he said the temperature rise is due to the internal filter etc, as they generate heat as they run, and to help this problem to get an external filter. So I think that I'll be saving my pennies to buy an external filter.

I have had my axie about a year and a half and absoutely love it (still cant tell sex as I have only one so cant make a comparison), I have my tank set up on a table nexy to my bed, and often lie there watching it wondering around and it even follows my finger up and down the tank

Enjoy many years of happiness with your axie

I did wonder whether when i rigged the filter up if the temp would go up even more but its still at 24, put 5 lots of ices packs in last night and still no drop. once the winter hits ill prob be having the opp problem and be struggling to keep the temp up lol.
aww ta, im sure i will, I cant wait to get them, I keep going into the pet shop just to see the ones they have there :) roll on next sunday.
today is all about water testing, fingers crossed thats all alright and nitrates arent too high.

Use Half liter, 1 Liter, two Liter, 1 gallon jugs if you have to filled with dechlorinated water. It will make a difference. Go as large as you can till you get a drop.
A fan across the top will help so leave it there if you can. That thing should work better than any aquarium fan set up on a screened or open top tank. Try moving it closer?
Internal filters do indeed raise the temperature are are typically avoided for that reason. I am running an internal, a Repticlear 350, in one of my tanks... but that filter has a top mounted power head that will allow it to be run with that heat generating portion remaining just above the surface of the water. Can you try that with yours?

Ive had a look at the filter and theres not really much heat coming out which is good. the fan was on full blast and practically in the tank, nothing seems to be working :(
so mac are you saying just keep changing the water to drop it? should a fridge some water to do the change? would that help?
on a good point, did the water tests and ph was 7.2 no3- 10 and no2-1 got hard water which I knew but the readings for kh are 20d not sure what that means but the rest are ok arent they?

When my water gets too hot I put bottles of frozen water in the tank. Try to keep a bunch on hand in the freezer so you can switch them out as the melt.

oooh we have movement lol!! put in 5litres worth of ice bottles and it actually finally dropped!! obviously a 1lt bottle wasnt enough,( the other half has filled the freezer with bottles) but its now creeping back up again. hoping to keep it down enough till I get the fans. but im a lottle happier. just could do with a little bit more, lowest ive managed is 19 degrees so hopefully that will be ok??

19° will be good.
I always have about 10 .5 liter and a couple of .61 Liter along with two 2 liter bottles in the freezer. I also keep two milk jugs (1 gallon US or about 4 liters) in the fridge. Right before I do water changes on my 55 Gallon US tank I keep two 5 gallon jugs in there and use that for water changes.
The fan should help keep temps steadier once you have the temps down a bit.
