Hi everyone, i hoped i would never have to post a thread in this section but one of my axies, Silkey is in a bit of a bad way :(:(:(:(... I was away fo a couple of days and my sister was looking after my Axolotls for me, i normally have the tank covered but she didnt't cover it so Silkey went for a bungy jump... I went to clean up some stuff in my room about 15 minutes ago and thought omg where did that mutated worm come from its huge... And then i thought no its not a worm, huh what is that!... And then :eek::eek::eek: AHHH and there was silkey looking dead :(:(:(:(.... I froze for a minute in shock and fear and then pocked him to see if he was still alive and he moved just a tiny bit... I grabbed a bucket filled it up, declorinated the water and chucked him in... And now i have an axie swimming around which i thought was a good sign... He stopped for a bit and then swan to the top of the bucket and it looked like he was trying to gulp some air and jump out of the water... His skin looks quite bad its really dark and theres some red bits like red spots spread out over his body and it looks like some his skin is coming off, kind of like he's got a fungus infection but there was no sign of a fungus infection before but i think this might be because he jumped out and was probably rolling around on the floor... I don't know how long he was out of the tank but i hope he recovers, i will try and get some pictures but i don't want to move him to a different container as its kind of hard to take a clear picture of his skin and that in an orange bucket... Now i would just like some advice on what i should do now and if you think he will be ok.... I can't beleive this happend poor little Silkey :(:(:(
Thanks for any help you might be able to give guys ..... Oh and Silkeys the one in the picture on the left
<---

Just had another look at him and his gills are bent forward alot! And hims tail looks kind of swollen and his hand looks broken :s

Do you have an approximate amount of time for how long he was out of the tank? If it wasn't terribly long then things should be fine. Just keep an eye on him, and the skin shedding isn't a sign of fungal infection, but could be a reaction to being out of water. Why did you put him in a bucket rather than back into his tank?

I have no idea how long he was out of the water... i didn't think it was a sign of a fungal infection its just what it looks like... I put him in a bucket because i thought he might be injured, well he looks injured and i didn't want the other axolotl to attack him because he thinks hes weak but i don't know if thats how axolotls think... Should i put him back in the tank???:confused:

You must have some idea...has it been hours? or minutes? was he still moist when he was on the ground?

Hours maybe, the gills looked like they were dry but not completly dried out... They were really small but have grown alot more now but are curved forward, which is probably just from the stress of everything so im thinking of putting him back in to the tank to calm him down...?

I think you where right to put him in the bucket, it will be easier to monitor. Keep the bucket covered, and place in a cool place. Outside will be fine as long as it is in a safe spot. Maybe offer some food, but make sure you remove it if it is not eaten. Would you be able to add a picture ?

I think i will put him in the cellar where its nice and cool and none of my other animals can get to him... Im scared to even move the bucket i feel so sorry for him and its really not nice seeing him like that but i hope he will get better soon... Should i try feeding him tonight or should i just leave him to rest and try tomorrow... I will try and get a picture on tomorrow when i change the water in the bucket so i can put him in a container where you can see him properly but i will see what if i can get one now...

not to mention, if there is something unfortunate happening you don't want it spreading to your other axies.
dropping something in for him to eat can't hurt, as long as you take it out in the morning if he hasn't eaten it.

Oh no Hayley, I hope he is fine.

Is he using all his limbs comfortably? I would say as long as he appears to have no physical injuries and takes some food he will be ok to go back into the tank in a couple days.

I assume the skin problem is due to his slime coat being damaged, perhaps a tea bath will help with his sore skin, I believe it is a tea bag to 10litres of water but I would be happier if you waited for someone with more knowledge to comment weather that is a good idea.

Just out of curiosity how big is the gap between the water and top of tank?

I really hope he pulls through for you

Thanks guys, i just offered him some food but he did'nt take it :(... He tried to move away from it but just rolled on his back :s :(... His tail still looks abit swollen and red and his feet look really red but not swollen... I guessed his slime coat would have been damaged, how bad is that? From the water to the floor its about 4 foot... Now im thinking of any internal injuries he could have :( :s... I will wait and see about the tea baths but im really scared now that he's not eating and can't move properly. I don't know what to do :(

There is a vet down charlton that treats Axolotl, but it is £50 just for a consultation

I took some potos of him, he swam up to the top of the bucket after i took a couple of photos. When he swam to the top he put his head out of the water and i think he squeaked, well im sure it was him ... But anyway i hope the pictures help, you can't really see the skin coming off but you can see what i mean about his feet, tail and gills... :( :(

£50 is a lot with out them even doing anything, well since im in college with no job i will just have to see how much my mum and dad love him but i don't think they love him that much :s

to be honest he looks better than i expected.

It looks mostly like tail damage doesn't it perhaps he landed on that and hopefully the damage is limited to that area.

I wouldnt give up hope, lovely bright gills, clearly a fighter.

TBH i think my axies have shocking memory and so I doubt he ever remembers the trauma, once the damage is repaired he'll be right as rain again.

It's just a good job they are naturally very good healers, and can redevelop cells and tissue instead of scar tissue like us, hopefully his tail will sort itself out.

I hope your right Daz, he looks bad compared to how lovely he normally looks but im just worried since he isn't eating and rolled on his back, it was a good sign that he swan to the top of the bucket so i know he can swin ok and he didn't take his time doing it... I just hope he won't have to deal with a fungal infection of anything...

Very bad news, Silkey didn't make it :'(... I think he died yesterday, i havnt disposed of his body yet i just put him in some clean water in case he is alive but im pretty sure he isnt :(... Really thought he would have made it, sad he didn't so

I'm so sorry to hear about your axolotl. My axie Alonzo hated it when I had to take my other axolotl out, he snubbed me for days until I put him back in. I think some don't mind being on their own, other's do.

R.I.P Silkey.

Oh m, poor axie. I'm so sorry to read this... :(

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
