Ghost/glass shrimp

I don't really have a siphon other than a gravel vac, which didn't work. So I tried just pouring out a little and testing it and the PH is 7.4 or higher, (used lower test for time being) no use in mixing tonight.

I only know that we have both triturus cristatus and triturus vulgaris living near me where the water is very hard(primarily due to CaCO3) and the pH quite high. I will sample the pH of their breeding ponds this spring.

In the UK, T. cristatus and T. vulgaris are generally associated with hard water areas, and T. helveticus are more common in soft water areas.

I have bred and raised T. helveticus in very hard water with no problems, though...

Update: moss water testing at 7, will wait til goes lower before mixing with clean chlorine/chloramine conditioned water. Moved newt back to regular tank, still hasn't eaten.

Don't take this the wrong way but why would an R/O system be safe and bottled water that has been filtered by reverse osmosis not be safe? I can only learn by asking.

P.S. took a look at pics of the newts Caleb and Jesper metioned. They're pretty cool looking.

RO water (bottled or homemade) is unsafe if you simply put animals directly in it. It is safe if mixed with conditioned tap water, or if it is used to refill volume lost to evaporation.

Just wanted to note haven't had chance yet today to use moss water, but before putting the newt back yesterday I did a partial water change with conditioned water and today he is in the water. I will still try to get it to neutral but it's kind of a good sign he's in water, maybe he'll even eat today

Exciting news for me anyways, the newt ate today. I defrosted some bloodworms and fed him with the tongs and he ate hopefully it wasn't too much or too little. Maybe he's just a once a week type although it's a day over a week today.

That's awesome Jessica. See, the little partial water change you did could have helped get him back in the water, and usually that's all it takes to get an animal eating. Keep up posted.

Hey thanks Rob. I don't know because even during that week there was a little water change. Maybe there was something I couldn't test for in the water that more or less "flushed" out this time. He's in the water now and still alive. He moves around a bit. I still see him near the gravel a lot. Keep your fingers crossed
