Hi I want to try and rally up some interest in the uk .Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas how a load of us could make it to AG Urodela in gersfeld next year?
I think phib keepers in the UK all have a fantastic ambition to make it there.
How about we organise a coach or hire a minibus and go to the 3day show?
I Think its a brilliant idea,And I'm sure we could generate some interest.
We could make 2 pick ups 1 mIddle/bottom of England and 1 near the north, or however many neccessary ,the more numbers the cheaper the experience would be
Any suggestions?

It is a good idea actually, there is no coach traveling to a Gersfeld show at all which is disappointing in all honesty!

Well if this coach has to travel from where you are Aaron (Scotland) then I suggest stopping at (if this is a coach trip thats taking the Euro Tunnel):

  • Newcastle upon Tyne (or Middlesbrough)
  • Manchester
  • Birmingham
  • Gloucester
  • Guildford
  • Maidstone
That way it practically goes in a line at places where people all over the UK might be located. That's if it is possible of course depending on the time etc that it takes for travel.

Doesn't even need to start in scotland.I will travel anywhere in the UK to jump on this coach and we could even start it from portsmouth or somewhere more middle region like London, lincoln, manchester, then on the ferry at newcastle.Who wants to go to gersfeld and live the caudata dream!!! CB phibs galore 10 for the price of 2.All the species you dream of,from Echinotriton Andersoni to The rare torquise ,ruby chested lycsalamndre tortollini tip, that poops golden nuggets and reads your future!
Not to mention meeting the European guys that are leaps and bounds infront of us,when it comes to Amphibian Husbandry. The Dutch and German approach toward Captive Bred caudata/Urodela is something I could only imagine.P.s I'll even where my kilt lol
lol

Hi Aaron
would you be planning to stay in accommodation as it ranges from £40 -100 a night. I think its a good idea my dad does something similar with poultry to Carlisle. Think it sounds a good way to get new genetic lines and gain some great contacts.

Only concern would be the costs and would it be cheaper to courier.
Sean

I might be interested it's just money costs and everything really.

I might be interested too, I'd certainly like to be kept informed.

Has anyone else given any thought to this?
Ive been looking at public transport and surface transport in the eventuality of having to go myself and seems rather expensive, and i doubt the carriage of newts via aircraft is a commonly practiced alternative.Does anyone have any suggestions on coach hire, car, train?

Minibus hire can be very reasonable. Depending on how many people go we could even hire a 7 seater. Considering the cost of a van is as little as £45 a day in the week, £90 at the weekend, I imagine the total cost of minibus or 7 seater could be around £300. For the 3 days or so. Between 7 people that's less than £50 each, just for hire. Chip in for petrol and the total travel expenses wouldn't be likely to top £80 or so. The more people there are the cheaper it'll be.

I'll be in depending on the dates. What is the date for this year? I definately think minibus or large car hire is the way forward. If we were to all go by train the cost would rocket.

I imagine the whole trip could cost less than £150 each when you factor in food, petrol, vehicle hire, accommodation, etc. Does that sound reasonable to people? Obviously the more people that go the lower the costs.

We'd probably have to get advance payment incase people pull out cause otherwise those left could potentially have a massive bill.

I believe it is the 18th to 20th of October. Accommodation would need to be booked well in advance.

I doubt I'll be going on those days, I can't take time off work during term time.

Don't mind advising on the trip though

Jane i was hopeing you would be our driver if we went ahead and got a 7 seater and you drive jane i will pay your 150 to max 200
Im sure your work would understand such an important event we could get places booked/deposits in for end of june ?
I have already got the time off booked from work so if we looked into it thos month we could sort the deposits out for end of june

Oh my God I REALLY want to drive you all... But work really will not let me take it off, it's actually in my contract. I'm a teacher so I can't take weekdays off in term time. We would have to leave Friday evening and return by Sunday evening which only gives the Saturday at Gersfeld.

:(

Working with all those kids will probably expose you to a whole range of infections which could require you to take some time off to recover ...... just saying

I agree with ian ,jane those kids can be very infectious particularly around october when the weather starts to turn wintery .Just think of the caudata children this is our christmas !

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
