I have heard that frozen brine shrimp can be a good food source for axies. Does anyone have experience with them? I heard they can be quite messy but they are very nutritious. Is there any other frozen foods that are good for axies? Thanks.

Grant

Go for fresh earthworms. Frozen foods aren't as nutritious as fresh, and freeze dried is not as nutritious as frozen (they have practically no nutritional value). Frozen bloodworms are okay, as long as you suppliment the diet with other foods. Waxworms, mealworms, butterworms, crickets, etc can all be used as food items in balanced diet.

Hi Grant,
I feed frozen brine shrimp about once a week and Aubrey loves it. I also feed bloodworm, waxworms, mysis shrimp(not so fussed) and occasionally beef liver. He loves his food!!! lol

I feed frozen brine shrimp too, but I do when she is in a bucket whilst I clean the tank so once every 2 weeks, they are VERY messy I just let them float around in the bucket and she snaps at them.

Are crickets really OK to feed axies? I need some variety for mine as she will not except the type of worms we have available here, so I fees her on bloodworm, brine shrimp, dried tubiflex and fresh beef heart.

I know our local pet store sells little containers of cricktes for feeding reptiles etc are these suitable?

Yup, those are the ones you want. Although really there isn't any cricket that really unsuitable.

Mine will not eat bloodworms, any frozen food, brine shrimp, or anything but wax worms, red wiglers (like little earthworms), and pieces of large earthworms while they're still moving. But, he will only eat the wax worms if I rip their head off first, if I put it in there with its head on he will snap at it and spit it out (even if its dead) but if I rip its head off he eats it in one big bite.

I fed mine frozen brine shrimp when they were about 2-3 inches and juvenile. They generally don't go after brine shrimp once they're bigger than that, though. I feed mine axolotl pellets from the Indiana University Axolotl Colony. (Michael Shrom also sells them for the same price.)
