Question: First newt/Salamander?

While it may seem cruel, it's really best not to buy animals from places like that. It creates a demand for them, to which they must supply. This causes them to import MORE animals, which means more people will buy them, and they will import more. You get the point.

This is why we encourage people to buy captive bred animals. Newts can safely be shipped through the mail. Overnight, or sometimes even 2 day shipping is not that stressful to them. Many people here have shipped animals.

I have contacted the only person I found with a semi recent advertisement for fire belly newts.. Hoping he will still have them! I checked around all the listings where people usually sell things locally here with no luck :[.

I was also wondering, just how aquatic are these? Should I have hiding places above/in the water or both?

Steal away! Hee hee that's why I showed it, to share ideas. I gotta warn you though, the bamboo generally start to die after a few months, and need to be replaced. For some reason they can be revived once removed, and added to some other bamboo/plant arrangement.

Enjoy! Good luck!

As for geting it set up, I think I Treated the water, and let it run for a few days, then plop, plop, plopety, plop in went the newts. For me , the rest took care of it's self.

The decorative bamboo sold in most stores is not aquatic. The stems do best with only the bottom inch or two under water. =]
