Are you going to silicone the slate down because that might help, and if I needed to have a ton of plants in a tank without sand I would put them in pots/little tubs with sand or use fake plants, since you're gonna want to fill the tank with as much plants as possible

I wanna say that its a male but I would get another opinion

I tried to pick the one with a long tail, and most weight on it and it had the biggest lump down there, so I assumed that was a lady's parts but since found out a boys got the lumps there, maybe my best bets to get one with no lump down there, and a thin tail? And hope I've two of each sex?

I did not not help myself in sexing it by the attributes I picked it for! Lol :)

I would not go back and buy any more if these are petstore newts, I would try finding a breeder, but finding a breeder for this specie of newt can be difficult

I'm in the uk, there's no breeders of newts, I'm hoping to get clued up as much as possible and get a female and hope for spawn, my friends had a newt from the pet shop for a few years now, it's why I wanted one I liked hers it's pretty :) I've re-done my tank I've now a polished slate bottom and a few stones in hope it's ok, I really don't like nothing on the bottom il cut some rough slate for my next water change, or try locate some sand that's suitable, a newts not a common pet here not many of my pet shops sell newts, I had to wait for this one for 2 weeks so it's prob been shipped it's plump and hanging about in the plants a lot and I've seen it eating worms and brine it likes brine it ate loads at first it's eased off now on the brine and ate a worm ever day or so, really appreciate the help :)

Don't be daft, there's plenty of people in the UK that breed newts, You may not be able to find them instantly after a couple of key strokes but we do exist.
The best thing you could do at the moment is perfect your set up to properly cater for H. orientalis, and then consider buying more, I don't think anyone would sell animals that they had invested a lot of time raising unless they were certain they would be properly cared for.

The problem with petstore newts is that they're wild caught from China, and because of the poor conditions they come it, the often stressed into refusing water, food, etc
And I would continue working on getting the setup complete with a ton more plants before getting anymore
Here's a picture of one of my old H. orientalis enclosures, sorry these pictures aren't the best(and no that is not a heat lamp)

Chinadog you find me a breeder In South Yorkshire, I tried as I know they ship the wild ones from china over here it's why I had to wait on the newt, I'm a dog breeder, I show them so I know pretty much every selling site on the net, I could not find a breeder, when a newt is £2-£7 in a pet shop, I think very little people will take the time and effort in breeding them, my waters ph is spot on, I've not just bought the newt without any knowledge, it's the pet shop made me buy the stones, extra sales they also told my other half that guppies can live with newts, I argued this, but let them get on with it, because now I've a fish tank and a newt one, my pet shop is getting a other lot of newts in, they will keep doing it, nothing I can do and me buying or not buying ain't going to stop the process, I rather give them a 2nd a chance I'm hardly loosing £1000s if the newt dies it's just sad on the newt and a shame :(

Well the more people buy them they think "oh, people are actually buying these, we better keep getting more shipped in"

But it's impossible to stop everyone buying them so it's a loosing battle until banned but china has no animal rights, not everyone's going to keep them in bad conditions after buying tho.I come on here and asked questions, and if my tanks ok, at the end of the day it's like saying oh don't buy tropical fish because it's increasing the importation, they originally was imported all the tropical pets, and I know some breeds of fish are still imported because they are to hard to breed in tanks, I'd have happy bought from a "newt breeder" but it's a bit of a bizzare not common pet, so for me it was my only option I'm afraid or I'd not have a newt
