What are the best foods for Alpine newts? I now have a few juveniles going and want to make sure I am going the right route. Generally the staple for my aquatics are: blackworms, earthworms, small crickets, fruit flies, and whatever else shows up that is edible (scuds, sowbugs, small flies). The guys are pretty small now. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My M.a.apuanus inhale anything that goes near their mouth. Your list is suitable but you have to tailor the food items to the habits of the newts - M.a.apuanus can remain very aquatic as juveniles and terrestrial insects wont be suitable. Earthworms are very nutritional and make a fine staple. If the newts are small chop the worm up into bite sized chunks. Small aquatic newts also do well on frozen bloodworm if you can train them to eat it. See this document for nutritional details of a selection of feeder insects: http://www.nagonline.net/Technical&#...02MODIFIED.pdf
