Well I managed to keep my axolotl addiction to *one* axolotl for well over a year, but I caught sight of the 'Golden Albino' mutation the other week and decided that I had to have one.

So meet the latest addition to my collection The Doctor. Yup, as in Doctor Who. I gave him this name because the poor little fellow got lost in the mail! So he spent over a week traveling to all the wrong places in a little box (unfortunately his was not larger on the inside), and of course he does have amazing regenerative powers. So the name seemed appropriate.

Despite his misadventures The Doctor does not seem any worse for the wear. He was well packaged and in a 'breather bag'. However I was very nervous for him.

The Doctor is around half the size of Bluebell so for now he's living in an isolation/quarantine tub. My plan is to lower Bluebells temp to about 62 degrees and keep his at 68 and feed accordingly so that he gets a chance to catch up in size faster then they can both share the large aquarium set up.

Does anyone know what a safe size ratio is? Bluebell is about six to seven inches The Doctor is around three to four. The aquarium is a twenty gallon long. Bluebell is a luecistic (I know the wildtype are more aggressive).

I just have the one pic at the moment since it has been a long week for him.

That is possibly the most perfect name for a golden coloured axolotl with their regenerative powers!

I can't give you any advice, since I don't own any of my own (I was drawn to the title), and would feel out-of-step. I'll just admire him.

( I've decided, should I get a pair, they're going to be called Dana and Spooky. Dana obviously needs to have very red gills! )

Oh yes! Dana would need to be an Albino (white with the nice red gills). If you were in America I'd say Spooky would need to have the glow (GPF) gene, but I know you can't have those guys in the UK (shame). Mulder had a fairly dark theme to him so perhaps just a wild type! But beware, axolotl are very addictive.

The Doctor is looking and feeling much better after a few meals! Bloodworms seem to be a favorite although I did not try fish fingers and custard (I was afraid it would make too big a mess). Sorry, bad sci-fi joke, I couldn't help myself.

The white that seems to cut off his tail is actually a plate propped up on a rock that acts as a hiding place.

Well, you couldn't very well be offering him apples, could you?

He does look a little rounder. Perhaps you could try telling him those bloodworms are fish finger and custard flavour...

Nah, if I were able to get a GFP (and I still don't know where I stand on that debate; the science is pretty cool, the trademarking and notion it could stress them out is drastically less so), I'd have to name him after the Unnatural Baseball Playing Alien Whose Name I Can't Remember.

Tooms is a rather good, if macabre, name for an Axie. Oh dear, if I'm not careful, I'll end up planning for the whole cast, and I really don't have the space for that!

( Name wise, I could also go for Small Films dragons. Groliffe and Idris and Soup. And Graculus, even those he's a bird. Groliffe and Graculus would be a great pair of names. )

Yeah, I'm sure he would have just spit the apple right back out. Time Lords are finicky eaters. Giggle.

I have a GFP, she really hate the black light cause I think it makes her eye balls glow so I just don't expose her to it. I think from now own I wouldn't get anymore GFP, but I wouldn't begrudge anyone who got one as long as they didn't keep a black light on them all the time.

Heehee, a whole cast of Axie!

What a gorgeous axie :)
& the name is fantastic!

...have you tried feeding jelly babies? :D
(DrWho freak but olde school :p lol)

<3 >o_o< <3

He looks so much plumper and healthier already
- It sounds like I need to watch some Dr Who lol :p

I love me some old school Who as well! I was afraid Jelly Babies would make him too hyper.

A week without food will make a poor little axolotl thin very fast, but just a couple of days of food will plump them right up!

...and yes you need to watch yourself some Doctor Who...go do it. Now. The axolotl commands it. Giggle.

(I also have a Colombian Red Tail named 'Gallifrey')

There obviously needs to be a Doctor Who episode that features some Axolotl-based monsters. Friendly monsters, though. Just a misunderstanding. (Seriously, these gills NEED screen-time.)

I keep reading that wax worms are good for plumping them up. Any chance of getting him treats?

What a perfect name! I've had that name in my axy books for a while now- just have to find the right one!
For fattening him up, if you can get earthworms give them a go.

Axie *totally* need some screen time! That makes me want to draw a giant space Axolotl. I think I'll have to do that.

It's a good axie name and when he got lost in the mail it really just seemed to fit!

I can get some waxworms no worries. never gave any to Bluebell cause she's already so plump!

The Doctor has already been munching on red wigglers which are like earthworms but a lot smaller so you don't have to go to the trouble of cutting them up (which is really gross in my book).

I'm also seeing if I can train him to come to the surface and eat floating pellets the way Bluebell does. Bluebell is in a filled 20 gallon tank, but if I open the lid and tap, tap, tap, she slowly swims up to the surface and expects to be fed (and always is). It's a lot of fun to watch her swim.

I just love his tail!

and the other bits, such pretty sparkly gills!

Quick sketch I did of The Doctor as a gigantic space axolotl on my digital tablet. I was too lazy to make it a proper drawing, but it was fun anyway.

Oh my, that is very nicely done.

You know, you need a glazed ceramic police telephone box for his tank. I'm sure there ARE ceramic Tardis. This needs to happen.

That would be EPIC. There really must be ceramic tardis out there!

And either axolotl are easier to train than I thought or The Doctor is a particularly clever little creature because he's already coming to the surface for hand feeding. My Bluebell came to me hand fed trained already so I wasn't sure how long it would take.

I don't think they're official products, but I have seen ceramic ones over here. And you must be able to get something similar online... A moneybox would be dandy!

I think axolotls are like labradors; they will do almost anything if it means they get food.

  • Katia Del Rio-Tsonis:
Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
