Hello, my axolotl is ~11 years old. Last night I found him spending a lot of time near the surface, this morning I noticed he was still spending a lot of time at the surface. I poked him with my finger and he went under but then came back up. I went to work and now I came home to find him on his side underwater mostly unresponsive. Air came out of him as I move him. I took him out of the water and he move slightly shook him gently but little response. I placed him back in and upright, he is likely still alive as he moved his head sideways and yawned slightly and raised the tail. I also notice his cloaca is very swollen, his tail looks more pale like no blood is in it, gills look like haemorrhages have happened, he does not appear to be flapping them at all.

I'm doubtful anything can be done but any tips would be appreciated.

As an update and also photgraphed the lower jaw and arms also appear rather swollen. He has red patches near the gills and under the lower jaw.

what is the tank temperature?
what is the kh gh? what salts minerals or chemicals are used?
what is his normal food source?
the swelling is a slight concern as well as him being pale, for now tub in fresh cold dechlorinated water with 100% holtfreters + 0.2g/l magnesium sulphate added.
if he will eat try to feed shrimp prawns fish etc..

18C, water is softer, eats axolotl pellets. I put him into the salt bath around 7pm he was completely unresponsive no reaction to anything and has not moved at all over night so I suspect he has passed.

The other axolotls in the tank are behaving like normal.

sorry for your loss
