The larvae should have external gills, I'm assuming they do? The tadpole wouldn't. They really don't look anything alike. They would be (sal larvae) longer with a bigger head end and obvious gills... Can you get pics? I'll try to find an old pic of ours...
This is one of the A. Maculatum (spotted salamanders) from last summer. It was several weeks old at the time. When the first emerged they were probably half that size.
I was pretty sure it was a tadpole. I'm disappointed that the smiley face isn't anything special though! I haven't seen the salamanders lately, but as long as the tadpole isn't eating them, they must be in there somewhere! Last I saw they were about a 1/4 inch long and look like flitting little legless critters. I doubt I can get a photo, at least not soon. So far they've flitted past the side and disappeared into the murkiness. I"m just not that fast with the camera! We are surprised and fascinated with all the pond life in that bucket full of pond water! I'd love to get the tank cleaner so we could see the salamander larvae but I hate to disturb it more than necessary.
