Egg Yolk

Hi

I don't know if anyone is still interested/watching this thread, but they are still going great!!

The others like it much much better than the golden's though, but I guess they may be like this with all foods?? I wouldn't know...

Thanks
Danni

This is an interesting thread, but I am wondering if you are using organic eggs? I have a feeling that non organic eggs may possibly hold traces of various chemicals/ medicines and so on.

Hi

I am sometimes using some of our own eggs, as we have chickens, so they wouldn't have chemicals. Sometimes I do use supermarket eggs if our chooks do not lay that day, but I live in New Zealand and there are laws here against chemicals and medicines in food and things like that, so I think they are fine :) (I am not sure about the standard of food in other countries though)

Thanks
Danni

I've used egg yolk for my baby fish once but I never thought to feed it to baby axies. Genius!

(The bad thing was that I forgot I had a little bag with egg yolk in my room... I found it a week later, opened it and the smell was so... evil)

Anyway: I wish I had baby axies too

Yuck!!

Why don't you get some (baby Axies)???

Fascinating thread thankyou for posting will definatly be watching how your babies get on :O)

I think i will try this on my babies too. A+ for trying something new, great thread

My eggs are about to hatch, thanks for giving me something else to try.

Hi

Just an update. The Axies are all fine, but I have had to separate the gold ones from the "spotted" as the spotted ones are much larger and they often chase/nip at the smaller goldens (Maybe because they are similar to the colour of the egg yolk?).

Anyway, so one of my golden ones had shorter gills on one side and I think they may have got nipped by one of the "spotted"s so I now have them separated over two ice-cream containers for the moment.

Thanks for being interested!
Danni

It has been suggested that wild type axolotl larvae are more aggressive to other colour mutants, (I think it was in "Developmental biology of the axolotl" book) so the nibbling of the golden albinos would make sense.

Interested post, please keep us informed of growth and mortality rates, i wont be trialing this on my own guys but its something to keep in mind if i ever run out of live food and have no other options.

This sounds cool, think I may try varying my baby axies diet with some egg yolk, I suppose it is very nutritious, and it can't hurt to try it out! Thanks for suggesting such an interesting idea :)

Just thought I'd add my two cents -

Recently had some axies hatch and had an issue with my BBS hatchery so was feeding them with the egg yolk for the first few days. There were a couple of them that were not very appreciative of it and I thought they were going to die because I could see the air bubble inside them.

Luckily they obviously ate enough of the yolk to survive and they all made it through until I was able to give them BBS :)

Thanks for the tip!
I did notice that they gorged themselves on the BBS as soon as I first fed them, so I definitely would think that feeding yolk is something to only be done in conjunction with other microfood.

Re: Photos!

Quick question - when you say "shake it up well" are you shaking the raw or boiled yolk? Can someone provide a really quick step-by-step process to preparing this for them (i.e. shake the egg, cook it however, etc)?

I've got over one hundred 10-14 day old larvae that are no longer doing well on microworms and my BBS won't get in until next week, so I've got a gap and they're already beginning to starve :s... as a result I'd really like to at least try this (I tried chopping up frozen bloodworms and swishing it around but that failed miserably, just ended up with a huge mess)!

Thanks so much Danni and others who posted information here (man I love this forum)!!!

Re: Photos!

My eggs are now starting to hatch and I am still struggling to get old of daphnia eggs, so I am going to try the egg yolk tomorrow when i get in from work, great idea and fingers crossed it will work. Has anyone tried giving it to their adult Axies ?

How did you prep the egg? Did you hard boil it and just cut out the yolk? I'm down to 5 axies, of which only 2 seem to be eating :(

You simply boil an egg for 10-15 minutes to make sure its hard boiled. Cool the boiled egg by running it under cold water or puting it in the fridge. Then peel the egg shell, then peel the egg white, and there is your egg yolk. You can mash up the egg yolk anyway you can, i just mashed it with a fork, or you could try the other method with the bottle and shake it real good.

Thanks so much Elspeth!

Unfortunately, as of this morning, the last 5 of my larvae have died :(. I just don't know what went wrong, everyone around here was telling me I did everything right - I guess that ~week I couldn't get any food going (hence my urgency on this thread) made them so weak they couldn't rebound... I'm a little disappointed - they seemed to be improving in the last two days. A little heartbroken :(.

But at least I'll know for the future! Thank you all for sharing this information.

Sorry You lost your baby Axies Elaine, I lost my first batch yet the store I gave some of the eggs too managed to raise theirs no problem at all.

That sucks but is still good in some respect... mine didn't want to go near the axies until they had all four feet haha. Well, I learned a lot and hopefully next year will be more successful.
