Duck weed compatible with ????

I purchased a small amount of duck weed today, which I am surprised because it takes up a lot of the top, even though I only got a small amount. I like duck weed, I like how pretty it is and how it takes over lol. Are their any plants that are compatible with it? Meaning, plants that don't require a lot of lighting, as the duck weed gradually takes over the surface. Also, any plants that will do well in cooler water? I sort of got tired of looking at the dracaena as it really isn't an underwater plant, and it doesn't stand out very well. Duck weed provides oxygen, and reduces the Nitrate levels, but I would really like to add some other plants as well.

I am really enjoying my duck weed at the top of the tank. About how long will it take to cover the top of the tank? I have a 20 gal tall tank, and I had a very small amount of duck weed. I heard that this stuff doubles in size after about four days, but I am not for sure.
 
AFAIK optimum growth is at 25C which is really quick growth 15 hrs of light per day, but you dont need that hehe so just use a 15W bulb leave it on for 7 hrs i guess and see how it grows.

I scooped out half of mine last week, and it's all grown back! Soon you will be cursing the day you ever put it in your tank. lol
It's not that bad, it's just annoying getting your arm covered in green stuff everytime you need to stick your hand in the tank.
From memory duckweed doesn't need a lot of light, my light was on 12 hrs a day, but the duckweed went nuts so I cut it down to 8hrs.

I've already started to notice mine growing! I always have loved Duck weed. I can imagine it will get a bit annoying to find my arm covered in it, but I just love to death how it looks, and I want to keep my light on more often because we have a lot of company come over. I find that when My axies were in the tank, they would spaz out when ever I would turn on the light for the guests to see, and I always felt so badly. Lisa, what is your experience with growing other plants in the tank with duck weed? I found some weird moss that grows in balls, but it is very exensive, they look like rocks covered in moss, but it is really just moss balls. very strange! I want to get some for my tank. I have no idea if it ankers it's self to the bottom, or if it rolls around with the current. I would think it would be pretty funny to see large moss balls rolling across the bottom with Axies swimming about. It would remind me of an old western movie with the tumble weeds!
 
Ahh Rheann i bought those Japanese moss balls myself when they get here i'll let you know. I think they just sink to the bottom and grow, sure look good though.
 
really Dev? Where did you get yours? You ordered them online? i would really like to get some. I just think they are so neat, and i know they would look really great from what the pictures I have seen. can you recomend a good place for me to get them? I found them online for about $4.50 or something, maybe $4.95, i don't remember for sure.
 
Hey Dev, I found some funny stuff online about them. They have to be taken out of the tank and squeezed to be clean. If you try to squeeze clean them while in the axie tank, they'll make the water yucky. Also, they just roll around on the ground at the bottom, and I found this funny pic of a newt balancing it's self on top it, and another one of fish doing the same. I also think they are pretty easy breeders, and they breed rather fast. I'll look up some more stuff on them, and find some good prices. those moss balls are so wacky and cool

Lol. I meant moss balls. They're great little things, like the tumbleweed of the water world. I can't wait to get some. I read where they can get over 12 inches, but it takes decades according to the websites I found.
 
I have a couple of moss balls (they're called marimo moss, if you're interested). I bought mine online. Can't remember where tho, sorry. They're kind of pretty, but I wouldn't pay $10 for one. I think I got mine 2 for $8 or something, plus shipping. Yeah, I remember, because I bought 3 other plants and they were all rotten. Hmmph.

I've had mine for 6 months or so, and I've seen no noticable growth. I took one and split it into parts, and the parts have just kind of balled up. It's suppose to attach to driftwood and such, but I guess we'll see.
 
i got mine for 3 for $13 with shipping included from aquabid. But they are coming in from germany thats the drawback so its taking a while but oh well its cheap and didnt want to spend a lot of money.

I really like them, and they are just the funnies things I think I would ever hope to find in a tank. Hey, maybe I can donate some of the extra duck weed to the petstores for Goldfish food. They feed them oranges, but I think they would like to have some duck weed. It's really starting to grow, I love it

Rheann for an easy beginner plant, get a dwarf anuibius. They can be expensive depending what size you get. But if you start with a small plant, you can watch it grow.
They will grow in the substrate, or attach to driftwood or rocks. But in the mean time you may have to tie it on.
Anyway, good luck with your duckweed, I see it's already spreading. Oh and those moss balls sound fun... I can imagine the axies rolling along on top of it like a circus performer, with the music and all. lol, dont mind my twisted humour.

Today I went out and got some plants before I saw your post. I got some Nymphaea bulbs, not sure if they are red or green yet. I also got some Hidbrid Aponogeton. Both look really pretty from the pictures, and while I was at the store, I saw that in this big tank thing the store was already starting to grow some, I could still see the little bulb things attatched. On the packages, they say they can grow in almost any water condition, which I hope this also means they will do well in 63 degree water. Also, the pet store gave us a free crab! The little guy has his front pinchers missing, and he floats funny, so they gave him to us for free. He is living in the Axie tank until I put the Axolotls in the tank, then I will find another home for him, and put my Axies into the tank. My tank is ready now for the most part, but it is just way too hot right now to put the Axolotls in, so the crab can take advantage of the tank for now

They would too, the moss balls from what i have read don't attatch them selves to anything, they just roam free like rolling tumbleweeds lol. They have to be taken out of the tank every so often and squeezed to be cleaned. I also read somewhere that people try and take algae and roll it into balls and try to sell them as the moss balls. That's not very nice, because the moss balls can get expensive. Taking regular algae and rolling it together and selling it as something else is really not very nice. I hope I can get a good price for some real ones. I'm still looking over the net

What type of light fitting do you have? Single or double? Another thing i remembered, red leaved plants need heaps of light. Go for dark green plants as they need less light. (generally speaking, im sure there are exceptions)
I found for the first month my plants just sat dormant, and slowly rotted away. But once they adjusted to the temp and light, and had finally had a chance to root, they started to throw out shoots and new leaves.
 
I am not sure about my lighting. It came with the hood that came with the tank. It is some sort of really bright florecent light I believe. I have the Aquarium box put up in storage behind some other very large boxes filled with things, so I can't go and get it out to look, but next time I am at the store and I remember, I will look at the same packages and see what sort of lighting it is. The bulbs actually came with the tank. It seems to work pretty well, because I have noticed that the duck weed has multiplied. I was really surprised. I need to get a new filter. I am really worried about this right now. I did a 20 percent water change on the tank just a few minutes ago, and I noticed a lot of Cat hair floating around in the tank! I think this is because I sometimes leave the lid open. I also noticed some dust floating at the top of the water, which I cleaned out all I hope. I also scrubbed the sides of the tank. Does this filter need any attatchments such as piping or anything? Tubing? does anyone know? This filter looks to be the right one for me. Also, I read on a couple of posts that I can delute the flow of the water from the Canister filter, but how would I do this? Do I use some sort of netting, or spunge? I will soon purchase this filter. I am also savign to get a cooling system. Also, I think I am really starting to dislike the black sand that I have in the tank. I noticed that it is small pieces of glass. I had to take out the Dracanae that I had in the tank, because the roots were getting shredded. I think I'll go with the extra large river pebbles, the round kind. I really like it! I'll just use the black sand for my Geckos, I hope it won't cut their feet, I don't think it will.
