Seriously...

my neighbors sometimes bring over visitors to ogle at my newt zoo. Most of these are biology / eco - types and are very enchanted, which is the only correct and enlightened reaction. But every now and then one of them will say something like "Eeew...those are gross".

Now..how on earth can anyone think a tankful of cute, colorful, fat little alpine newt juvies is "gross" ?!?

these are the same types of people who'll think you should go all coochety-coo over their human babies, those bawling, writhing blobs of pink blubber with the snot drips and the sticky fingers. EEEW!!!

clearly, people need to work on their priorities....

Mostly I get the "eeeeew" reaction to the snakes, or to the answer to the question: "What do you feed them?"

When people say that to me, I tell them to put their hand in the tank and let the axie go nuts. What can I say, it keeps me smiling!

I have definitely gotten the "Eww" response.

A couple other reactions I have had the pleasure to receive:

"What ARE those things?!"

"Creepy..."

Or my favorite:

"Why do you have weird fish in your tank??"

Nope.
Everyone knows I'm a wierdo.

The belt of six hundred spent .50 cal rounds and the belt of 100 20mm dummy rounds tends to attract more attention on the extremely rare occasions I let anyone into the Creepy Salamander Cavern.

With my axolotls, I have had people say the ewwwww..
Have had one person nearly faint at axies (I tried not to laugh).
Had had another say "how can you SLEEP with THOSE in your ROOM!?!?!"

But mostly, people just nod their head slowly.. take a quick look, and leave the tank, never returning for another peek.

I have axolotls in the dinning room and people freak out a lot. I get the "eeew" and "WTF" is that. But never in my presence, people respect me plus I wear a holster and other stuff at all times at home. Its funny my brothers friends will freak out and make tons of noise but when I make entrance there's always a cricket silence. I think its rude to say "eeew" about peoples pets, appearances, and their cooking!

I get ooooo, ahhhh, and where is it?

Love the ewww reaction, as a school teacher, my students think i am even weirder when i tell them what my pets are( and then some come up quietly later and ask if i have any for sale:D)I My wife tolerates my axolotls but calls my firebellies ugly little pipsqueeks.

No one is 'that' impressed with my newts...except the neighbours grandson :) he loves them lol.

My snakes tend to get more attention, but most people either find the newts very interesting and beautiful or are entirely indifferent to them and can´t be arsed to even peer closely into the tanks to see them. The one that really gets the "eeeeew" reactions is my tarantula.

No 'eewww's' towards the axolotls! Everyone loves them, and everyone who has been round has had a 'go' at feeding them. By 'go' I obviously mean they like the IDEA of feeding them but invariably drop the worm down the most awkward place in the tank and I have to dive in and retrieve it, often pulling out the moss wall, while getting attacked by hungry axolotls and listening to room-wide panic and apology.

I usually do it myself the next time, but at least they tried ;)

Once saw a woman in a shop literally edge away from a tank of gorgeous baby leucistics who were staring her out. What a weirdo.

I don't get the eww reaction about my axies, but I do get:

'Wow that is so cool, I want one! So what are they then? There a type of fish right?'

No. No they aren't -_-

As some people have said i also get the question "You have what ???"
Also people refering my axolotls as fish aswell which in my books are wrong so i tell them their not fish!!! haha :D
Mum refers them to "floppies" Dont ask where she got this from hehe! My nephew likes looking at them from a distance but is more scared of my crocodile skull in the tank bless him hes only 3
Don't think i've had any "ewws" yet but most people are interested as what they are and think they're pretty cool

haha me too! most people LOVE them antill they try feeding then jump and run away in fright because they wern't expecting such a fast snap.

My sister refers to my axies as 'sperm with legs'. She just doesnt see the cute side of them:eek:.

I love the What is that?!?!? And who can forget the why do ur fish have legs?

With my firebellies I get ewws and severe nose crinkles then I start going off about how cute they are and how I pamper them as much as I can. They then change their beat and get curious. Guess they figure they can't be too bad if i'm so excited about them!

The day I got a newt delivery at work was fun, every one wanted to see.... From 3 feet away lol

My favorite though is my friends 3yo son who always asks to hold them lol (no, they nevdr come out of the tank) sits and ogles them calling them 'cute black fishies'

Yeaa, when my realitives come over and they see my hamster cage and they ask whats in there and they freak out. They also get freaked out by my whites tree frog and green tree frog.So on purpose I take them out and they run out the room lol. They don't seem to mind my baby marbled newts and my red eft since they are like 2 inches :D

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
