Cynops Cyanurus Tank Journal

I disagree....better to learn with healthy, captive bred animals than to learn with wild caught ones. Plus ethically, the whole idea of WC H.orientalis being disposable is disgusting...
Elli, we do read the comments, and we are trying to give you the best advice we can. You are of course free to ignore it if you wish. Jen might have said that 5 gallons is ok for the one cyanurus, but then again Jen is someone with a great deal of experience who has the knowledge and ability to maintain adequate conditions in such a volume, but you might not be.

I do not find them disposeable ... I am not saying its OK to risk killing anything which is why Obama taking the time doing my research here ... but any newbie makes mistakes it just happens

How can you know if I can maintain a 5 gallon if you never give me the chance? I have had everything from a 40 gallon to my current 5 gallon and I believe I can maintain both ... however I will start with the 10 gallon with two orientalis and see how I feel about the cyanurus.

I don't know how anyone could see any animal as disposeable ... I am taking my rat in for surgery on Tuesday ... but ... its hard to explain I just feel safer starting with the orientalis and they have been in captivity a while I am not supporting a pet store

I didn´t mean you considered H.orientalis to be disposable, Elli, my commentary addressed Coastal´s comment because i´ve often seen similar things said and the implication is that they are sort of disposable.

I don´t know if you can maintain an adequate environment in a 5 gallon, that´s the point. That´s why i´m recommending a larger volume, which increases the probability of anyone succeeding to do so.

You are certainly right that we all make mistakes, more so when we are new to the hobby, that´s why we try to advice newish members in order to try and get them to avoid making the same ones that others have made over and over.
As for the newts. if they are already accostumed to captivity you are a lot less likely to experience problems. Healthy H.orientalis make great captives, very easy to maintain and breed, very rewarding. I would still advice you to cycle the tank fully and make sure conditions are optimal before acquiring the newts. Take your time, don´t rush anything and you´ll pretty much be golden.
For the record, either species is equally easy when you deal with healthy animals, the choice is yours, obviously, but don´t be afraid of H.cyanurus.

Are you guys reading my messages? I bought sand and I am buying a 10 gallon ( not due to the pressure but Sue to me ordering 2 firebellies)

Also I am getting both ... Jen said that one cyanurus would be fine in a 5 gallon I will just have to custom fit a mesh top for this tank.

Its just a matter of which to get first and from a financial standpoint it makes more sense to learn with the cheaper ones.
We saw how you were upgrading eventually, but we just wanted to tell you how it would be more convenient to start with the 10 gallon and not have to upgrade at a later time.

Elli,
Trust me when I say that no one is attacking you or trying to discourage you. It would be easier if we could chat face to face instead of typing, which doesn't convey tone. I have only been a member of this forum for less than a year. During that time, I have seen "cowboy" attitudes of new people and "conservative" practices of sage members and everything inbetween. It would be great if we all had the resources to establish the perfect set up from the start, but we don't.

My impression is that you have taken the recommendations to heart and you're making changes to your plans for the positive. Getting the FBN first does not perclude your getting H.cyanurus at a later date.

Rodrigo is very passionate about these animals and his passion comes across strong at times :)happy: @ Azheal). But as the second part of his last post indicates, he didn't want you rule out getting the H.cyanurus at a later date.

We see new people come and go for their various reasons, but don't get too frustated at everyone. Everyone starts at the beginning and they're just trying to pass on all that experience to those who are open to listen.

Please keep us updated. :yin-yang:

Well I have news ... My bettas lights keep going out ahold I got fed up and moved him into this tank which he is loving :)

I have a 3 gallon and a 10 gallon filter running in his old tank whick I am feeding ammonia to seed.

I decided if we have space I will get two 10 gallons one for the orientalis and one for the cyanurus. If not I will figure it out. However my birthday is the 28th which is also payday so I am getting myself the tank and the rest of the newt supplies I need :)

I do have off topic news as well. The 2 1/2 year old rat we had the tumor removed from is doing wonderfully :)
