Hi

I was looking at other Caudata tanks and some had moss. Could i have moss in an axy tank? If so can i get some at a pet store?

Hi John,
I have several different kinds of plants in my axolotl tank. They like to "hang" in the plants.

What kind of lights does your tank have? That might decide for you.

What kind of moss were you thinking of getting?

If you're going to get moss, I highly suggest Java Moss, as it tolerates colder temperatures and low light.

My room is low light and i don't have any extra lighting for my tank. I am thinkng about adding for stones around the tank and i wanted somthing to cover them.

Java Moss would probably be the best then. I don't know for fact, but supposedly, you can attach a clump of java moss to a rock with a rubber band and it will attach itself, or you can leave it and let it float in the water.

Yea you might try java moss. It tends to grow in a tight mass that they could possibly become tangled in if they are small axolotls. Larger ones should be strong enough to break free.

I am not sure low room light is enough light for java moss. Guess the only way to find out is to try it!

I keep it in some of my aquariums for baby fish to hide in, and you can as Dot said, attach java moss to drift wood and stones by using a rubber band or fishing line.

If you try it let us know how it goes.

Whats the avarge price of Java moss would anyone know.
IN AUSD or NZD

my local aquaria store in the US sells a small mass of java moss for the equivalent of 4.50 AUSD. I'm sure I'm getting ripped off, but it's the only place anywhere close that has it.

Dot, the plant that you're thinking of is Java *fern*, it attaches itself to rocks, driftwood, etc.

Oh really? I've never had any experience with Java moss, just with Java Fern. That's interesting.

Yea I know what you mean Clarence I can't find it any were near me.

Have a look at the live aquarium plants on eBay there's loads usually.

john i see your in nz, me too! go have a look on trade me under home and living-pets and animals-fish-plants and decorations. they always have java moss and fern for sale there

Java moss for sale? Wow. Around here, it's free to a good home (or any home really). Don't worry about low light, water quality, etc, it will grow in any conditions short of full salt water. It will attatch to rocks, driftwood, filter intakes/outputs, heaters, other plants, or anything thats stationary.

Damn, now I want some moss! Yet another visit to Vebas aquariums coming right up.

I have the marimo moss balls in my tanks - everything has been fine for months. And they look neat!

Those things are cool! I've only ever seen them once. They look like little meatballs you've left in the ridge too long.

Sharon, I've got three of them. They're cool. Like fuzzy pet rocks.
