Considering getting an axolotl as first pet..good idea????

Hi there im new here.
I have been wanting to get an axolotl for a very long time.
I have a few queries as i want to make sure I have a good bank of knowledge before getting one.

- What do I need for starters, that will keep him going before i can get good things.

- Will he need any special care, specific foods water,lighting etc.

- What kind of food can he have that are cheap but healthy for him.

Is an axolotl good for a first pet or does it take alot of effort and experience

No need for lighting, they're nocturnal. No need for heaters they prefer cooler temps than warm.

Starters get a big enough tank (minimum 2foot long for one axie, 3 foot for two axies).

You'll need test kits to test the water as its cycling or can get the petshop to test the water.

you can cycle by using a piece of raw shrimp or small cube or raw meat, drop it in the tank.

Special care: as long as you have good water quality and can maintain temperatures below 20C, feed earthworms, not feeder fish; also don't overstock on a small tank (ie put too many in).

Another thing if once you have your axie you decide you want another, make sure any new axie companions are quarantined for 30days before introducing. This is to ensure it is healthy and will not pass any nasties onto your current one.

What about if you have them quarantined

feeder fish can have parasites and make your axie sick. They also will nibble gills and tail of an axie and excrete a lot,; which can add to waste in your tank and may have water probs.

The cheapest food if you can get a starter source is earthworms. ONce you have them set up a wormfarm/compost bin and you're have a cheap constant source.
