hi all
did some mods to my light this arvo. mounted 2 x 12"cold cathodes to the inside of my fluro
assembly. they were white cold cathodes and i spray painted em with a blue frosting spray and have a variable 12vt power supply so can lower or brighten the lighting. the photos dont do it justice but it gives off a nice cool blue lighting to the tank, i have done this so my axies can see where there going @ night hehe "there soooo spoilt lol"
also added an Aerator so my axies can be more lazy lol

any way i thought some of u would be interested..

wow! that really make the water look nice. i used to have the cold cathodes in my computer when it was modded, they look really good. thats a good idea using them!. whats the Aerator your using? just a normal air stone or some techincal thing?.

Rob - I brightened the image for you, hope this helps

. The backlighting is dark, so I couldn't fix it up too well.

Will your plants still get enough light with the blue paint over the bulbs? It looks so pretty, I love blue!

thats where i got my cathodes from hehe, i stole em out of my comp
happy.gif
had 2 x 12" white and 2 x 8" black
"UV" but i never use em, used to do lots of comp modding
happy.gif
"till i got my tank"
just using a single outlet aerator with 2 x rectangle air stones attached hidden @ the back and bubbles go up the fake roots. i originaly got a dual outlet one but it was too strong...
couldn't use the flash to take the photo so its a bit dark, but the lights look very uniformed and colour looks very nice

thx Rheann

, beleave it or not i had already brightened the photo a fair bit lol, gotta muck around with my camera a bit and when i sus it i will post some new pics...
i'm only gonna use the blue lights @ night, still going to have my fluro on for 12hrs a day

all plants are thriving

crazy.gif

your tank is lovely!!!!

Cool tank,I love the blue light! Can I just ask what the digital device on the top corner of your tank is?I saw something smaller that constantly measures ph.

im not to sure but it looks like one of the digital thermometers and ph testers. looks like it could test other stuff aswell.

Gorgeous tank..!! how many gallons, how many axies...
....Ah,,, boys and their toys !! (I'm jealous)

thx Theresa
happy.gif

its a 190lt tank 36'x18'x18' "not sure in gallons"
only 2 axies in there @ the moment and another in a quarantine tank soon to go in...
no need to be jealous, i'm sure u could do as good if not better

i'm actually thinking of getting a new tank ?

hey rob, how did u connect the cold cathodes to a power source?. they have a rather weird looking connection since they're meant for a computer. did u just cut positive and negative wires of at the connection thingy and connect them to a power box?. also im going to buy one of those handy looking gadgets that u have tomorrow.

Hi Alex
make sure u use the box that should of came with ur cathode, the wires that come out of the power connection side are usually a four pin molex connector "common computer plug" usually red and black red being positive black negative, 2 pins not connected, i use a 240-12vlt adaptor "adjustable"
it does 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9, 12 good to adjust the light ;)"available at dicksmiths"
http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/43b50c95024c4aaa273fc0a87f9c06f0/Product/View/M9646
it's similar to a mobile phone charger.
try to find a male molex plug, cut one of ur parents comp if nessisary lol "joke" any comp store should help u with one, cut the plug off the adaptor and connect the wire with a line in it to the red wire and plain one to the black wire
or u could just cut the plug of the adaptor and cut the plug off the power end of ur cathode box
and just join the wires and heat shrink over the connection, but i prefer plugs as i have spare pins and plugs and the tools to use the remove and crimp etc... it's only 12vlt so not too dangerous to just cut and join
happy.gif
but make sure u use cathodes box and dont connect light direct to power supply !

hope this made sense to u as ive had a few beers
happy.gif
very hot here today

lol, thanks. my cathodes didnt come with there own power box they just came as the cathode lights with the four pin molex connecter, im pretty sure dicksmith electronics will sell the box i need to power them. thanks for your help!. ps. lol it would seem your tank is almost got a computer attached to it, the the computer fans and the cathode lights lol, and that lil gadget thingy!.

lol hmmm maybe i could make some kind of enclosure and mount my motherboard and powersupply in my tank and have a water cooled axie computer..
what an imagination hey lol
i'm sure that would get a few comments on the comp modding site i got too lol..

p.s if ur cathodes came like that i would just cut the red and black an attach it to the power supply i gave a link to, the good thing about the inverter box is u also get a switch with it so u can turn on and off easily whithout having to unplug
this is what the box does
Cold Cathode inverter is sealed inside a durable plastic box to prevent short circuit and accidental damage.
Pre-wired with molex connector for easy connection to the power supply.External switch mounted on a PCI bracket for easy access
"i doubt dickies would sell it on its own"

lol yea, the thing about cutting the wires and attaching them to a power box is what i said i was going to do before. lol iv seen a computer with an aquarium in the box, but the box was wider so it had enough room and you couldnt see any of the mother board or hardrive or anything. another thing i could do is just attach it to my computer, get extensions because my computer is very close to my tank. it would look a bit messy and id have to leave my computer on to have it on. so i think ill give that a miss.
wink.gif

if u have a p.o. box or trust me with ur Address
"i'm not a stalker lol" i will send u the box and wiring if u want free of charge i have a few spare
from previous mods...
up too u
if u do, PM me dont put details here, just to be safe
happy.gif

yea i agree that look awesome!.

is it safe to use uv lights in an axolotl tank?. i had some in my computer a while back and it made the computer look so kool, like everything glow. i imagine it would be harmfull to them. but im not too sure.

Nope, it isn't uv light. People call it UV light. But as far i know, people can't see UV light. The correct name is blacklight for these types of cathodes.
UV is low wavelength, 400NM and lower. Blacklight starts at 375NM, and still visible for humans.
Of course there is some UV in this type of light. But no harmful.

Please correct me if i'm wrong.

edit/
Plus you got the UV-A and UV-B thing.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
