Ah, with you. It's a bit like setting up an expensive and high maintenance cleaning system, is that right? Because the carbon sponge came with the filter I kind of assumed it was a 'standard' - daft, I know, but I learn new things every day from people like yourself
The Carbon sponge has to be replaced every 4-6 months too, which, like you said, is going to get a bit expensive. The fact that Amazon also sells the PF Mini and PF 1 White Foams as 'Add On' Items also makes buying new ones a bit awkward...you essentially have to spend at least £20 on Amazon just to be able to order them, and usually, I don't spend that much.
It also kind of sucks that a carbon filter will also remove any treatment apart from dechlorinator from your water. Definetely a no-no for a hospital tank.
When you say 'floss,' do you mean those fluffy white 'polishing pads' that sometimes come free as a sample with your filter? One came with my PF Mini and I had no idea how to put it in or what it would do. Again, sorry if that's wrong, filters and hardware aren't my strong point, hence this thread >.<
