So, who would like to have a get together. I've saved enough money that I could just about travel to the US or Europe, so I'm up for a meeting (I'm really annoyed that I wasn't in a similar position in early May for the UK get together).

Suggestions/ideas please

Well if you can wait for the next IAD Dr. Max Nickerson is presenting a talk on hellbenders..

Can you elaborate a little? I'm not just talkign about me going somewhere, I'm just saying that if someone arranged a get together (10+ people) I would probably be able to attend.

I'm having a dozen or so relatives over to the house next weekend for a cook out. I was going to serve buffalo burgers, but if your willing to come all this way for a square meal, I'll kick it up to buffalo filets

. If that doesn't appeal to you, there is the show in Chicago, that some of us went to last year. It's in October.

Hi John,
I'm not sure how many other people will go to this one but last year it was Jenni, Paris, Pin Pin, Mike Shrom, Justin Yeager and myself.
Other than that we can try yo plan a US caudata meeting. (although I have to admit my travel budget is limited at the moment because I'm going to IHS in August.

Hmm, maybe we could plan to get a group together for a "salamandering" tour. I know some good locations in the Poconos. Does anyone have any other suggestions??

Ed

I think the Appalachians, specifically the Blue Ridge would be great and not just because it is near me. This area is absolutely beautiful and home to somewhere around 10% of all US sals. If the meeting were in the fall we would be just in time to see the leaves changing color.

The Appalachians sound good to me too. Lots of variety in species

Doesn't everyone want to come to California to see the Tarichas?

I'd come to California to see Pin-pin, let alone Tarichas :p *Grin*.

It would be nice to gather up Russ or Paris for an Ensatina expedition, or any other experts at finding them, but I'm new here, can I go too?

the hard part for me -besides coming up with the $$ if its an on the spot decision-is to leave my animals for even a few days in the care of others. i did it for iad though -3 or 4 days. i go camping in late august every year for a 5 day event -200 miles away-and i always drive back after 2 days to check on them-its hard to leave them. driving to the east or west coast takes about 2 days either way...too bad there isnt anything here you guys would want to see....

What about North Carolina
biggrin.gif
? You have the App. Mnts., peidmont, and coastal plains...
I would be interested either way if it is on the East Coast. I hate flying (only when I have to go to a Conference for work).
If we are lucky, It will rain that weekend

and the temps will be mild.
BTW...Paris....how do you get your mohawk to stand up like that? I used to have one many years ago...it was a Football Team Dare sorta of thing...now I would be grateful to just have a part in my hair

! I'm sure you've heard of the rumor that bald men seem to have better success with breeding newts? Well that's what I say anyway

what about the west coast? like pin pin said theres the trchias, and lets not forget all the plethodontids....and then theres the california tiger salamander, very few ppl have ever seen one, let alone in the wild. then thers the neotenic tigers, and the pacific coast newts!

How about michigan? we've got a whole lot of ambystomids, and some other stuff, if you look. (and, if you all bring tents, i've got 40 acres, so no hotel rooms!)

hey, i figured everyone else was plugging somewhere, i might throw in my two cents

nice hotels here in california, and plenty of amenities and zoos. Also we have a plethora of reptiles out here in california. THere are also nice places here for having a meeting, plus we have the fun and the sun!

Well, John, it looks like you're just going to have to tour the entire US!

Actually, I know I'm new here, but that's not a bad idea. What if there was a one week or two week car pool, convoy,
or just a many hot spot where one would meet road trip?
Where people could check out the spots where there are known places to go and see, photograph caudates? It would
be like a touring convention. Ah, it sounds too crazy.

Well I'm quite disappointed that no Europeans have piped up. I didn't say I was aiming for the US - I said US or Europe.

OK, then, Japan it is!

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
