Hi everyone, this is my first post with pictures of our first axolotl Miguel in his new home!

We think he's a boy anyway, he's about 6" is it too early to tell?

Nice tank there Si! I think its too early to tell what sex he is.

O by the way, those pebbles are large enough that he doesn't swallow them right?

Jenny, it's a Juwel Rekord 120, close though!

Jordan, I bought the largest gravel I could find, he's being hand fed and we haven't had any trouble so far!

He coughed up a couple of smaller pieces the day we got him home, the shop had been feeding them sinking pellets some of the time, presumably straight onto the gravel, I deffo won't be doing that! Good to know it comes back up again though if he gets carried away!

I'm keeping an eye on it anyway...

Yes its a good idea to do that. Even if hand-feeding he might get an urge to try some gravel. The size of that gravel, if swallowed would be hard to relieve from the axies body.

Looks very well fed. If you could get a pic of between the rear legs, that would be helpful in sexing. Usually around 6 inches long is when they start showing their secondary sexual characteristics. Just on a preliminary guess, unless it's just been fed, it's pretty chubby and shows no hint of swelling of the cloaca as far as I can see (meaning it might be female). Another side shot would be nice.

BTW: I have a newt named Miguel... lol.

Those pics are really clear!!! What did you use to take them. Mine always turn out really glary cause of the glass.

Si - Nice setup, Miguel looks well taken care of.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi Si, yes welcome to the forum

Your pictures are very clear. I wish I had a nice camera like that. Juwel Rekord 120?

How much does a nice camera like that cost? I can do a currency exchange to find out how much it would cost here.

Awesome, thanks. Can I use a flash, or does it scare them? Si's look like he has used one, but I can't be sure.

I don't know, it might scare them, but it also might make the picture look to bright.

Laura, flash is fine. It does not scare an axolotl. By the time they register that something has happened, it's already gone. If you do use a flash, be sure to shoot at an angle to the glass. This keeps the flash from bouncing back into the camera and giving you that 'glare' or bright spot that shows up with flash.

Here's an example of what I mean:
This pic is taken with flash, but at a slight angle (not enough to keep the light from bouncing back)

This pic is taken the same time, with the same settings (except the autofocus chose the empty tank in the background instead of the tank), just from a more obtuse angle

Joan,I love your lounge(?)!Awsome places for your tanks to get viewed! Thanks for photography lesson

I didn't send you pictures of the carpet. You wouldn't be so enamored with the black/red/green/orange stripe shag. It's not even puffy shag, it's old worn out shag. It looks like someone ate a box of crayons and threw up on it. lol.

Hi Si , I have my new 2 in a Rio 180 but i took out the filter box for them ? I never tried it and was wondering does it give off much current?

Joan love your setup , are the plants artificial?
Not had much luck with live ones but some of the fake ones look so real now?

very nice tank and very clear photo's
and cute looking axie

the photo's are so clear i did notice he had black
"lets say finger nail polish"

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
