Can't reach bottom

hmmm.....
I'm not sure. Are the bloodworm frozen?
Could you try him on some live food. Just see if it can get anything going inside him lol.

Mel

Yeah they are frozen. I shall try him on some worms but he didnt seem to like them last time I tried. I will try again though . Thanks for your help

Ok so he didnt eat the worms. He is still eating bloodworms though which are enriched with vits etc.
Can noone give me any advice at all. Im really desperate now! Please help me help charlie

Looking at your last batch of photos, his lower abdomen does looks dark. I wonder if it is the sand.
I think if this was my little axolotl, I would try to put him somewhere cooler, he would be fine in the fridge as long as the temperature stays above 5 degrees. If he is in a smaller container place him in any cool room, under the stairs etc..if its dark it will be even better. Do daily water changes with dechlorinated water. When he next 'poo's', have a look and see if there is sand in it.

It seems strange to me that he is passing so much waste if he is impacted, This sounds more like an air bubble to me, hopefully some larger food i.e earthworm will help....of course Bellaballo Is A LOT more knowledgeable than me just throwing that out there.

I am sorry If you think I am calling you an idiot, I mean no offence just being thorough, do you de-frost the bloodworm cube before throwing in your tank?

Keep trying with the earthworm, my leucistic was such a hard sell when it came to earthworms but eventually he realised he loves worms, Try soaking the worm for a while before feeding if you are using 'dandrobaena' (sp?) they excrete a yellow 'liquid' that repels potential predators.

Also I was under the impression it is potentially dangerous to fridge such a small axolotl, am I wrong? I would like to know for future reference.

I really hope you solve this problem, it sounds like you are doing everything in your power to make him comfortable.

Good luck

With regards to fridging a small axolotl...i have fridged small ones that have had problems.
It can stop them from growing but its only temporary while they are at the low temp.

Thanks for the help everyone. Seems like I'm doing all I can do then.
The container he is in is being kept at about 8 degrees now so it's practically like a fridge. However I might see what temperature is like in the fridge. I'm scared if I go too low a temperature he will stop eating.
I'm doing daily water changes already so I'll just keep on doing that. I will also have a wee peek at the poo next time and see if there is any sand in there.
I do defrost the bloodworms first yeah. I haven't been soaking the worms first so I will give that a go and try them again. Or cut them up into even tinier pieces than I have being doing.
Thanks again for your help. Just wanted to make sure I was doing everything | possibly could.
On a side note the problems started when I switched from stresscoat to tetra dechlorinator because I heard stresscoat was bad. Could this be related or just a coincidence? I used stresscoat in the water change today just incase it was anything to do with that but I'm unsure how it could be!

As long as you are dosing correctly I can not imagine changing de-chlorinater would be that bad...I also recently changed from stress coat and had no such problems

Ah well must have just been a coincidence. I thought as much

This is probably a really silly question but is it ok to put a lid on a container if I put my axie in the fridge...?

Maybe a bit late now but yeah you can put a lid on with air holes.

Although i think 8 degrees is cold enough for him.

Mel

Thanks  I decided against the fridge anyway. It was about 5 or 6 degrees and I was a bit scared it would go under 5. Thanks everyone for all your advice. Charlie is still floating but he does seem much better so I'm hoping once all the sand has left his system he'll be back to normal

Ok Charlie is still floating but he's still eating fine. Even eating worms. Is it possible he just enjoys floating around? His tail isn't curled at all so he isn't stressed...

They can remain floating for ages, they have very good buoyancy but should come down eventually.

How long has been floating for now?

He's been floating for 2 weeks now. He might not be floating all the time but whenever I see him he is. His food is down at the bottom though so he must be coming to get that. Although the bottom is like an inch away.

Small ones do tend to float a bit but in normal position.
Does he have any plants in to hide under sometimes mine like to do this.

Mel

Hmm ok thanks.
There's no plants because he's still in the small container. I've always had a bit of card over it though so he's always hidden.
I removed all the sand from his tank (just incase that was the cause although now don't know) so hopefully he'll get back in soon.

Hi Sarah,

I hope your axie feels better soon. I was also wondering, is there enough oxygen in his tank? Sometimes axies float around the surface due to lack of oxygen or aeration.

I hope this helps!
Goodluck.

Thanks for that suggestion. I'm not sure I am changing the water everyday so surely there's enough oxygen? How would I go about putting more in...?
Thanks

Honestly, I would not worry about him floating in a normal position.
Mine do it. Its not a concern with babies.
