Calotriton asper video

Cool video Mark. Nice newts.

Seriously cool, thanks for sharing! :D

They seem like they want to eat each other even more than the bloodworms! :p

That's a great video of some amazing animals, Mark!

Thanks for sharing Mark, wonderful animals and you made some really good shots, I enjoyed it very much!

Beutifully done Mark - their eyes are so interesting. Thanks for posting this.

Very nice best vid i have seen in a long time.

Well, I'm new to the world of video so it's very nice to see such positive comments. Perhaps next time I will be less hasty and make you an even better sequence (different newts of course).

Dawn - the secret to my clean glass is low light, water changes and elbow grease.

I'm hopeful I'll breed this species although I'm fearful that I have only females in my group - that would be a major set-back, time will tell when the youngest fully mature.

You know, I've seen this species in person several times but it never occurred to me until I was watching your excellent video that they look remarkably like a lost species of Paramesotriton. I wonder if they are at all related.

By the way, are you still using that uber Canon video camera?

Phylogenetic analysis places C.asper closest to Triturus and Neurergus. Even more so than other species of Euproctus – hence the split to Calotriton.

This was actually filmed using a small Sony handheld (can’t remember model). The Canon XL was dropped off a cliff in Africa and is suffering somewhat. When I put Canon stills lenses on the XL for macro work I lose auto focus – this makes it useless for objects that move. The XL would only be great for macro if I invested in a macro video lens. I’m not even sure Canon make one for the XL and if they did it would be astronomically priced.

I have seen a flowchart somewhere that illustrates the taxonomical relations between the different salamandrid species, I've been searching a little...but haven't been able to find it. Does anyone know where it is?

That's even more thank I asked for, thanks Mark :D

To me they actually look like a cross between Paramesotriton and Pachytriton....but i consistently see similarities in pretty much everything so...

Mark - I manual focus my video at the moment and it works pretty well. I'll post something in the next few days.

That was an interesting short film - thanks for allowing us to share your animals in this way. I wish I had the time and money to invest in equipment, and know how of shooting, editing, and publishing to such a high standard - more please! :D

Can't help you with the video camera, but if you have access to a recent Apple computer, iMovie produces very impressive videos.
