AHHHHHHH THE BRINE SHRIMP WONT HATCH! THEY HAVENT EATEN IN 2 DAYS!.. ahh how long can newly hatced axoltols last without food??. they look healthy. and does anyone know if u can buy live brine shrimp. or something else i can feed newly hatched axies in australia!!! what about daphnia that would be good! ahhh!! ahhhhhhhhh! *ahem*.. its just they havent eaten and none of the brines shrimp will hatch!!.

hmm, i dont understand why they wouldnt be hatching, maybe you just got poor quality eggs. have you got a heater? what temp is the water kept at?How much airation is there?what is the salinity and PH? this is my first time in hatching brine shrimp and i have had heaps hatch, it took me three attempts to get it right though because i had to figure out what setting on the heater was best for hatching, i dont know how long the larvae can go without food but i fed mine a day after hatching and now they have little orange bellies. i dont know what else you could feed them because daphnia are hard to get in Australia (i think).

Shane - old or low hatch rate eggs could be the problem.

Also if you did not add a heater they could take 2 days or so to hatch depending on the temperature.

You need to find something for them to eat now. See if you can locate some daphnia or live brine shrimp from a pet shop.

Shane, try using ordinary brine shrimp eggs rather than the shell-less wonders. Microworms are also small food they can eat and a good standby if you can find any.

hey thanks so much. im less stressed now. i found a few hatched ones in the last batch i tried to do. its amazing watching them trying to catch them. i havent been able to find where i can get daphnia! ive also got another hatchery i made going so until i get the whole brineshrimp thing going i can get enough to sustain them.
the shell-less ones take twice as long as normal ones ive found out to hatch. im not sure what it would be like with a heater, im guess it would be alot faster but some of them have hatched wich is good. ive got normal eggs too but its so hard to sepperate the eggs. thanks alot for your help. ill have to get some photos up of them. they are at least looking healthy even though there is a lack of food. alot are looking like golden albino!!! im so hope they are, you cant see their eyes which indicated they are albino and they are gold! (is that right??) both parent axoltols are wild type so there must be some golden albino along the blood line somewhere. hehe. at first i thought that they were all wild type.
just with the food. where do you get micro worms? can you buy them over the internet, or will specialist aquariums have them? or even garden places?.

thanks again.

Daphnia is REALLY hard to come by in Perth so I'm guessing you might be having the same problem. At any rate, the daphnia I have been able to track down is too big for hatchlings.

Try specialist aquarium places for the microworms. I've just spoken to a guy from my favouritest aquarium shop and he assures me that microworms are definitely out there in Byron Bay - ring around and see what you can find.

A heater is really gonna improve your hatch rate - trust me, I know the difference. A basic little unit doesn't cost much and just needs to fit inside your 2 L bottle (if that's what your'e using)

I have been studying the different types of daphnia on my block and have found two types. One type is a little bigger then brine shrimp.
The other is much larger and you can se the intestines and stuff.

Daphnia magna is quite large. Daphnia pulex is smaller. Moina is smaller yet. But newly hatched D. magna are hatchling edible. You just put some adults in the baby's water, and feed them, and they have lots of babies. Then the hatchlings eat the babies... You get the idea.

Hi all, quick query. What do you chop up the blackworms with? I thought a razor might chop fine enough? I may be forced to use this method!!!!
Donna

Razor, knife, fingernail. Just as long as it's clean and sharp enough to cut them.

hey. thanks heaps everyone. sorry i havent been able to reply to anything ive been so busy looiking after these little guys. alot of them are starting to float! and the food isnt hatching fast enough. only about a quarter or a fith of the eggs i put in are hatching so my little axies have nothing to eat!. hey thanks for telling me there should be microworms out here somewhere ill deffinitely have to check it out. with micro worms do you just grow them and chuck them in? lol thanks heaps for all your help again!

Here's a dumb question: Why are brine shrimp the most recommended food for newly hatched axies? If I remember correctly, brine shrimp are saltwater invertebrates and aren't axies from fresh (though hard) water? Washing off the brine shrimp to prevent salt contamination sounds like taking a risk. What do the little guys eat in their natural habitat? It's probably not brine shrimp. What do frog polywogs eat? Wouldn't it be a much better idea to stick an aquarium outside with some water in it and allow it to get dirty and stagnant and maybe kill some bugs and throw them in the mix and then use that as the food for the axie polywogs? You could take an eye dropper and add a few drops here and there. At least that's what I used to do for my toads...

I was just reading all the feeding methods on the axie main site. Looks like I was just doing the pondscum method!

LOL

Brine shrimp are recommended because they can be easily hatched in large quantities and they are nutritious.

Hey Cynthia,

Thanks for emailing them for me :D.. i totally forgot about this thread, been up to my eyes in suff at work!

I think im going to get 2, i dont think i nee anymore than that.. though i was thinking if anyone in the UK would like one or two, i could get them shipped at the same time... so a note to everyone in the UK, if you would like to order these let me know and i'll find out how much they will be in total.. payment before i buy them pls!

Cool deal Kim. I have 2 of them and that is enough for constant brine shrimp hatching (using heat).

Cynthia, i it ok to put a tank heater in a coke/fizzy pop bottle? does it not melt?

Kim - I use a light blub to heat mine with. I put the brine shrimp hatcheries inside an empty 12 gallon aquarium and clip a lamp with a 60 watt bulb directly over the aquarium. It keeps it nice and warm.

I believe I have heard others say they use the small aquarium heaters for like 5 gallon tanks on the plastic pop bottles. Some one correct me if I am wrong, please.

Kim, I use the heater in the plastic bottle method. The heater is only set at about 25 degrees - not hot enough to melt it unless its made of ice!

. It reaches higher temps than that if you leave it in your car in summer and still nothing happens. So its perfectly safe.
