Brine Shrimp

hi everyone, i got some brine shrimp eggs and tryed to hatch them the other day, most of them hatched but when i went to practice collecting them i saw the orange things that were supposed to be the brineshrimp but they werent moving, i think that they were dead, some of them were alive and swimming though, do any of you guys know why they would have died? maybe i should have collected them sooner. is it okay to have the air pump making the water in the hatchery swirl around really fast because i thought that could have killed them. also what is the easiest way to collect the brineshrimp without collecting the egg shells?
 
Vanessa please specify the water ph, salinity and temperature. Aeration is fine and needed to keep the cysts suspended.
 
With hatching, are you using a heater? From memory I think I had mine set on about 25 deg C.

I have tried two methods of collected the shrimp. One - straining through a stocking - of course you collect the shells too and it's really messy so this isn't the best way.

Two - pouring the water from the bottle into the black brine shrimp hatchery and placing the fresh water container on top. Takes a little time for the shrimp to swim into the container but is definitely less shells collected.
 
the ph is around 7.3, i filled a two litre bottle half way and added 3 tablespoons of aquarium salt like the indiana university said to and the temperature stays at about 28 degrees as i have a heater in the bottle.
 
Your ph should be at about 8.0 (try to keep it constant and test often), a tablespoon a litre should suffice (table salt seems to yeild good results never tried aquarium salt personally). Temperature 80-85F
 
Vanessa - if you let them sit for a couple of days after hatching they will start dieing off. I tried to feed them all within 24 hours of hatching.

As far as collecting them without getting the shells goes... the best way I found to do this was to use the brine shrimp hatching bases for 2 liter pop bottles.

They have the airline go up through the bottom of the base which is screwed onto the neck of the 2 liter bottle. The large end of the pop bottle is cut off.

When you are ready to collect brine shrimp you just unhook the airline from the pump and kink it (so brine shrimp water doesn't come squirting out all over) and let the bottle of newly hatched brineshrimp sit for 5 min or so.

The egg shells and unhatched eggs will float to the top and the shrimp will go to the bottom. You just unkink the air hose and let the shrimp and water run through a brineshrimp net. If you don't need them all just plug the airline back and let them bubble until the next feeding.

I have questions about the brine shrimp. Brine shrimp are used to feed baby axies, are there any other things that can be fed to new born axies? I saw the little brine shrimp hatcheries at the pet store. Also, how old should Axolotls be before they can breed? it is 18 months? I don't plan to breed mine until they are old enough. I would just like to write stuff down and learn all I can before I breed them. I would like to see if some pet stores down here, the ones I actually trust would be willing to buy some off of me when they are old enough. I wonder if at all this would be a possibility. Other than this I want to breed them just for the sake of havings some of the babies

dev, what other types of food would be ok for Axolotl babies? Axolotls can breed at 12 months? Can baby Axies eat blood worms, or water fleas?
 
They reach sexual maturity within a year, mating depends on their mood i guess i dont know hehe. I havent had the opportunity to raise babies myself but from what i have read they can be fed brine shrimp, very small daphnia and tubifex worms. as they grow you can feed them bloodworms. Perhaps someone else here has actually fed them something else and shed some light on it.

your axies having babies or are you just preparing for the future hoping for a m/f pair?

No, My axies won't have babies for a while. I have actually determined that they are around 6 or 7 months of age. They are getting really big! They might be older, I have no idea. They might also be a bit younger, but it doesn't seem so. I am trying to prepare for the future. I want to learn all I can because I want to breed them for sure. The pet stores here have very small Daphnia, and their is also Flash Frozen Varieties I believe. I look forward to doing this. I love watching life Grow. I want to see if the pet stores I trust to care for them would also buy some off of me too, then I could make some extra money, heh heh

hey. ah my brine shrimp wont hatch!. ive had them in there for 24 hours now. ill leave them for a bit longer to see if anything happens. ive done the whole salt thing, its in a bottle like ive seen on here, its being aerated. i know heating helps ill have to get a heater, but SOME should have hatched. shouldnt they? is it possible to aerate them too much>? i have a valve thing for one but not the other ive made myself, is thaty something that will make them not hatch?.

i also have some.... stuff lol. i cant remember what its called, oh i got it. Artemia Revolution. but its brineshrimp without the eggs, its a liquid. it says each drop contains 1500-2000 naupulii. is that newly hatched brineshrimp?... its strange when you put it in you cant see it like you can the eggs, so im not sure how that works does anyone know? lol it tipped over so i couldnt find out what happened. i just put some eggs in there so i can try them first it is only a small bottle of artemia revoliution. thanks to anyone that can help!
 
i meant brineshrimp without the shells of the eggs...lol does anyone know how that works. and how many normal eggs would that be?... lol thanks everyone.
 
I saw that Revolution stuff on that pet shop site - I don't get it either - how can you have eggs without shells?

Heat is really iimportant - go a get a heater right now!

Cynthia, They are just what im looking for.. tho i cant find any sold over here in the UK.. any ideas?
 
Kim - I did a quick search for bases like that in the UK and I can't find them either. I will look again tonight after work. Seems odd no one over there would sell them they work great!
 
If worst comes to worst you can try chopped up live black worms?, i had no hope of hatching the brine shrimp in time for my babies to feed, so i went with the worms, just chop them small, and as the axies get bigger so can the bits of worm.they love them.thats the only thing ive fed mine sofare and they are growing really well they are about 2cm long now and i havent had many die(yet).
 
Thanks Cynthia, I have tried this method before but found it quite unstable... maybe i could get someone to buy them and send them over to me?... how much is shipping from that website as you have to make an account to beable to go to check out..
