Hi. I have had this newt for 4 years. My a/c in the living room was not working so I moved him to a small temporary tank in my sons (cool) bedroom until it was fixed. while he was there he managed somehow to escape and went walking. i found a very hot dry newt in the hallway. several days after he returned to his tank he developed bloat. I looked it up here and assumed it was liver damage but was not sure if there was any chance it would resolve itself. he didn't look as bad as the pictures you had posted! he seemed to get better after about 2 weeks and shrunk back to almost normal size, but then two days ago he just started swelling again. now he is really swollen. he hasnt eaten. is there any chance of his recovering from this or is it just progressive? do you know if its painful?

do I need to euthanize my poor newt?

:( We have had this guy a long time but he looks so bloated now. does anyone know if he can recover from this and if i can help him in any way?

I had an alpestris develop bloat once. If you read ed's article on bloat, at the end he mentions a ringer solution. You can keep the newt in the solution to help the swelling pressure until he gets better. I had the alpestris in the ringer solution for about 3 weeks before he began to get better. He lived 3 or 4 yrs after recovering from being bloated. Until you get the ingredients for the ringer solution, I would put the newt in a terrestrial set-up. One end of the tank dry, and the other moist so you have a moisture gradient.

Thanks Chris. I did see that article, but had thought that the Ringer solution was an alternative to antibiotics for newts with an infection. I guess it's possible he picked up something on his journey across my apartment, but I had assumed it was liver damage from dehydration. I am willing to try anything though, so I will hunt out the ingredients tomorrow. If it will relieve the pressure and discomfort that would be great. He does have one terrestrial end of his tank and he is certainly making more use of it now than he used to.
