Blackworms are THAT expensive?

Blackworms will happily live in sand and won't be a problem for the tank. As Mary said, they'll most likely end up as food later on :).
 
With the blackworms living in the tank, keep in mind that when you stir up the substrate the newts can also feed on the worms at that time.

The pet store I get my blackworms from sells them for $1.99 an ounce or a pound for $14.00 (while my wife is tolerant of the animal foods in the fridge (she is also a Zookeeper) she doesn't like the blackworms because if the water quality goes down there are the occasional mass escapes into the fruit drawer.
