Hello I just purchased an Axolotl and I had a few questions. I have never owned an animal like this. First of all, my Axolotl has only been in its tank for a couple of hours and it hasn't moved more than an inch and i was just wondering if that was normal. Also, I purchased a Exo-terra F350 filter and it came with a little tube. There were no instructions as to what to do with the tube, in the directions or on the website, or even a picture of it. I was wondering what its purpose is and if I have to install it right away. Finnaly, there seems to already be a lot of bubbles in the tank, to the point where there visible everywhere and it affects the visibilty a little and I wasnt sure if that was normal or a problem.
thank you

Hi Capek, welcome. I moved your post over here to the Axolotl area, so the axie people will see it sooner.

The little tube, if installed, will suck air into the filter. This is almost certain NOT necessary, and may even over-airate the water. I would omit it.

Where are the bubbles in the tank coming from? Is the filter producing them, or is it gas dissipating from the tap water? How long has the water been in the tank?

thanks for the information. The bubbles seemed to be coming from the filter but they're not so visible now and the axolotl moved around some. Must just be getting situated i guess. He has eaten any of the pellets i gave him yet, is that just another part of the animal getting used to it's surroundings?

Yes, they sometimes take some time to adapt before they are willing to eat. Be sure to remove all the uneaten food promptly. Uneaten food will foul the water quickly, especially in a newly-set-up tank. Good luck!

Hi Capek,

Adult axolotls are quite lazy and spend much of their day doing as little as possible. Sitting down the bottom of the tank, just lazing about, maybe waddling a few paces if so inclined, waiting for the food...is the life of an axolotl ;). Axolotls are most active at night.

The axolotl may need a few days to settle into his or her new environment - not eating during this period is quite normal.

Would you be able to post a photo of the axolotl and the tank setup?

Hi there  I'm a newbie also and I've learned alot in the past year about axolotyls and still absorbing information. Unfortunately, I lost one as I did'nt realise axolotyls accidently sometimes injested the small stones on the bottom of the tank and have since replaced them with bigger ones. I've heard sand is another option too.
